Mumbai Apartments
Hi,
I'll be relocating to Mumbai on an expat package next month. My company has offered me approximately 225,000 INR (net) per month rental assistance and I was wondering if this is enough to get a nice 1 or 2 bedroom apartment in Colaba/Juhu/Bandra? Does anyone know how much it would cost to stay at the Wellington Muse apartments? My office will be in the Fort area, so I understand that it would be best to find a place in south Mumbai. Is traffic that bad? Any help would be much appreciated. |

For that kind of cash you could stay in a 5 star hotel.

But would be the best bang per buck...I should say that my company will be paying directly so I might as well use all of it.

I suspect 225000 will not cover a very large apartment in South Mumbai, (you are not looking for that anyway) but I am not upto date with rents there. In any case, with an office in Fort (and presuming other household members, if any, will not have to travel far from there) I would look at Cuffe Parade and Malabar Hill. Keep in mind that a few lakhs worth of deposit may be involved, returnable on leaving the apartment. Or adjustable over the last few months.

Thanks for the info. I'll be coming over by myself. No wife and kids. Deposit wont be a problem as my company will be paying. They will also arrange for someone to take me around and look at various apartments. I just want a heads up on what areas I should be looking at and what quality I can expect for the amount they are willing to pay.

In that case, have a look at Bandra too. With the new sea link, it may be worth it. Give you an idea of commuting time too, and what you feel about it.

OK will do. Do you know roughly how much a serviced apartment in a 5 star hotel will set me back? Had a look at Wellington Mews in South Mumbai and looks very nice...Or do you think I can get something better for my money?

Dunno, but I expect normal rates there to be around 12-15k a day- wild guess. You may get a better deal long term though.

And the ambience will never be comparable to the WM, even though the area you occupy there may be smaller. Edited to add: If you want service apartments, there will be other options which will be perfectly decent. |
