Mumbai Airport

Hi
We are going to Goa in January 2010 and on our return journey we will be in Mumbai airport for 9 hours and would like any help anyone can give us. As we would like to leave the airport for a few hours to pass a bit of time, between 6pm and 9pm as we have booked the celebrations lounge but are only allowed 3 hours max. and would like to know where we can go which is not to far from the airport.

It depends greatly as to what time of day those 9 hours are. If it were me Id tend to stay in the airport itself. Technically you may have 9 hours, but if you go out, you need to deal with your baggage, and after landing it can be a half hor to get it out. Also youi want to be about 2 hrs prior to departure so that cuts into your nine hours. Whereever you go will be an hour easily one way and another hour back so all in all I wouldnt leave, but thats me.

You might want to take a prepaid cab to Juhu beach to hang around a bit. It's close to the airport and there's always some action there.

Hi Traveller 1
Thank you for your reply,we leave Mumbai to Heathrow and then on to Glasgow so we won't see our baggage till we arrive in Glasgow.

Hi Spike,
Thank you for your reply,we will give that some thought. We do have a long journey home, from Goa to Mumbai then Mumbai to Heathrow, then Heathrow to Glasgow. The only good thing is we live 10 minutes from Glasgow Airport.

Mary, I doubt that you can check in your baggage in Goa all the way to Glasgow. May be some others can correct me on this, but I dont think many airlines in India have agreements with international carriers. So you would need to get your baggage in Bombay and recheck it to Glasgow.

It depends on the day of the week due to mumbai traffic.. if it is on a sunday then you guys can very well visit marine drive and india gate quickly.. get a pre-paid cab with return from the airport itself.. now with the new bandra-worli sea link, it might take around 45 mins to reach the destination on a traffic-free day.

Earlier this year when you went into Mumbai airport that was it. you couldn't leave at all. Bummer for a smoker like me. It was the same when I arrived last November until I charmed a female police officer into letting me out. Then I just stayed outside. might have changed!

Hi,
Thank you for your reply, but traveller 1 has told me that I may have to collect my luggage in Mumbai as they dont think that it will go straight to Glasgow as we thought,if that is the case we won't be leaving the airport. I am going to check with my travel agent.

Hi Buck,
We are fortunate as we don't smoke, so if we do not leave the airport it wont be a problem.
My husband has not seen his brother who lives in Australia since 1992, and through his wife and her family who come from Wales. we have arranged to all meet in Goa,although we are keeping it a secret from his brother we are going to surprise him. So I am very sure we are all going to have a ball.We even managed to get booked into the same hotel.

Hi Traveller 1
I got in touch with our travel agent and they said our luggage will go all the way to Goa, so I can only asume it should come back to Glasgow, but I will look into that. When we arrive in Mumbai I think to be on the safe side we will check to see if our baggage comes of the plane.Thank you for your comment.I will now take extra care.
Thanks
Mary

If you have sufficient time, you may want to visit the Hare Krishna Temple close to Juhu beach (in addition to or instead of the beach [Mumbai beaches are not as nice as those of Goa]).

Mary c there is a placein the airport as well where you can stack your luggage for a certain fee.I'm sure your travel agent must check that up and let you know just to confirm

Mary, your travel agent is mistaken. Mumbai is your first entry point into the country. You will go through customs in Mumbai. You may recheck your baggage again if the domestic airline counter is open at that hour. Please check with both the airlines about the interlining on your return journey. Similarly, your point of entry into the UK is LHR, I do not know if purposes of customs it is considered first point of entry.
