Mumbai Airport

Our plane land in Mumbai 00:20 am Sunday Morning. We are going to catch another plane at 10:45 to the Kerala on the same day.
My question is, what can we do (see) at 00:20 in the airport or in Mumbai till 9:00 am in the morning. We (we are 3 friends) don’t want to book into a hotel, because we are on a budget, and would rather do something in Mumbai. We will be to exited anyway to sleep for a few hours, because it is our first trip to India.
Any advise will help.
Thanks a lot…

you have a fairly common predicament, Utti, as it seems most international flights to India arrive at a late, inconvenient hour. Last fall I had an early morning flight to Goa after a late arrival and I hung out at the airport. Some thoughts:

By the time you collect luggage, go through immigration, and change some money at the bank counter it will be qetting pretty late and it is a fairly long way to downtown and I doubt you would find it worth the trouble/expense.

- your domestic flight will leave from a different terminal and there are buses provided by the connecting airlines (Jet or IA) to take you there (no charge)

- there isn't much to see or do at the domestic terminal -- it is bright and the seats not particularly comfortable. no real food until 5 or 6am (unless you find an employees canteen or something)

- if your connection is with Jet, they have comfortable armless seats in their business class check-in area and don't mind if you crash there. IA operates from a different area and I don't know what it's like.

- like you say, you will be pretty wired and not really in a sleeping mood anyway - you'll probably find a few others spending the night there to talk to and bring a deck of cards along to help kill time.

- there are some hotels in the airport area but rather expensive for what's on offer so unless you really feel like you could use a sleep or shower, probably not worth it.

- there are a few retiring rooms at the domestic terminal but they have never been available when i could have used one. no advance booking - inquire at an open admin office where someone will direct you to the correct office or inform you yes/no.

You are as well having a long connection time as transit through Mumbai airport and transfer to the domestic airport can take as much as two and a half hours anyway.

Have a look at this airport quality website which has lots of info and recent opinions. -m2- is right in all he says - it's miles to town so be prpeared and take some cards and a book. Also don't expect drinks to be cheap.

The consensus I think is that it is a hell-hole!

Finally from my own experience I would suggest that you have your insect repellant handy in your hand luggage as the mozzies within the airport buildings can be bad. Best of luck!

You could find a place to look after your luggage and then go to Juhu Beach (10 km from the airport).

there you can have a few beers in one of the clubs, then a drunken walk along the beach, then back to the airport.

If you decide to stay at the airport, take a walk outside and enjoy the atmosphere.

Temple at Juhu?

You could always head to ISKCON (Hare Krishna temple) and attend the morning program at 4:30am (chanting, dancing, free food). Not sure what else there is to do that early in the morning

Directions from Mumbai airport are here:
http://www.iskcon.net/bombay/contact.htm

It's a five minute walk from Juhu beach
