Haven't heard that one, and not credible as Mumbai is an international hub.

Unlikely indeed. A quick look at the airport website teaches the gist of it is in fact true, but of course it applies to just two runways and their intersection (planned dates given as October 1, 2009 till March 25, 2010): http://www.csia.in/runwayclosure.asp.

Notably:

Quote:
While the intersection will be closed, aircraft movement will be facilitated on a shortened runway from 1300-1700 hrs on Tuesdays. The impact of these changes in operational parameters has already been factored in the airline schedules. Meanwhile, on rest of the days the runway operations will function as usual.

In case passengers are travelling on any of the designated Tuesdays in the above mentioned time-frame, they are kindly requested to report for flights in advance and also complete all necessary formalities including boarding and security-check on time. Passengers can also contact individual airlines for further flight related information in this regard.

News is correct, of the 2 runways in Mumbai Airport, 1 is closed for major renovation. The other runway that is currently in use is closed every Tuesday from midday to 6, and all flights are rescheduled during that time. This will be till mid-Mar 2010. The runway that is closed will reopen in Jan 2010.

Yes, it will be going offline every tuesday for a year or so. Short distance flights are liable to be cancelled, long distance one's will be rescheduled. Check local listings, enquire, and then arrive on tuesdays.

If you are about to leave for (or from!) Mumbai, better check, as I have heard that the current monsoon has been causing major disruption with flights.

There is no monsoon. We've had a deep depression moving north.
It is causing damage. We were lucky, we missed the centre.

The intersection of the two cross runways is closed every Tuesday from noon to 6pm for work on the surface of the runway. There is a part of the runway which is left for operations of only some very small aircraft but even those are not permitted on wet runways as is seen from the accident a couple of days ago when an aircraft was landing.

Yes, Nick!!! Sometimes one runway has takeoffs while the other has landings and the twain shall never meet (at least they hope so!!!). This helps in reducing times for departures and arrivals by lining up aircraft for either of them without them interfering in any way. This used to happen only during early morning as the secondary runway was only used during the day time (not any longer as it is under reconstruction).

Cheers,
Aadil.
