Mumbai 22nd July-5th August

Hi guys. I will be visiting my family in Mumbai for 2 weeks from the 22nd of July. Unlike the usual family visit where you drop by everyone's house in a hurry and just sit inside sipping tea and talking about the most boring things, this time I've decided to at least check Mumbai out.

Any recommendations for within Mumbai would be highly appreciated, including:

- best places to eat
- best bars
- best discos
- best places to visit

Does anybody know any good bookstores in Mumbai that they recommend? Also if I can help anybody out by getting specific information in Mumbai about anything, I'd be glad to do so.

look around the board you will get answers to everything.

the most popular chain of book stores is Crosswords all over the city.
check out the gastronomic pilgrimage thread for places to eat.

the going out thread for nightclubs, bars and lounges.

if you want something specific, drop a line here.

Hi,

- best places to eat - this thread as told by Skinny might help ...the link is Gastronomic pilgrimage in Mumbai

Also read Skiny's Blog that is also a good reading ( Can't believe i said that ....dont take it as a acceptance of ur blog, Skinny ....am still pitching against it )

- best bars - Cant help u out here ...except the location
- best discos - Cant help u out here ...except the location
- best places to visit - Depends what r u interested in ...

Along with Crosswords ....do Check out Oxford bookstore near Churchgate and the street book market which is located on lanes from Flora Fountain to Kala Godha and From Flora Fountain to Americn Express Bank ...also for book road from Flora Fountain or CST or VT is great as it is the hub of few big book stores and wholesalers towards its end

Again for further info. can contact me or any other person via this forum by public or private message.

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living.

Strand Book Stall at PM Road is a very small bookshop but you will find some of the best books out here and also at a minimum discount of 20% which is not possible anywhere else in Mumbai!!! More discounts available on other books too. And when they have their yearly sale you have to be there!!! Discounts from 20 to 80% on all books so it is really a steal!!!

Cheers,
Aadil.

Unfortunately the Fort area street market for books is now gone (All books confiscated by the BMC whereas all other illegal activities continue unabated) and no one knows when or where it will resurface now!!! Hope it does come up somewhere or else I will really be missing it for all the good bargains that I have picked up literally off the streets!!!

Cheers,
Aadil.

Thanks very much for the info all of you.

I will definitely check out all the bookstores mentioned here. I don't know but they sound very western, as if they cater mainly to people wanting to read popular literature. I am actually looking for translations of texts like Kalki Puran and other Purans and also comprehensive editions of the Bhagavad Gita and Mahabharata etc. (Not the usual highly summarized versions we're all familiar with.) Do any of you think I'd have luck with such material at the mentioned bookstores or would I have to visit special libraries??

There is one near Mahalaxmi temple in Mahalaxmi Chambers called Motilal Banarsidass Publishers, it is a publishing house that usually does these kind of books on Ancient Sanskrit Scriptures, Indology, Indian History and Art, maybe they might have what you are looking for. The link to their website is here: http://www.mlbd.com/index.asp

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Aadil.

i would advice you to check out the places told by Aadil, first as he knows a lot more than i do in this regard, I know form the fact that i have been on a book shopping spree with him...
rather check his places first..
they might be off-beat and not so popular and well known as others that are told by us but they are most likely to have the kind that ur lookin for
