In terms of cancellations at short notice, which budget airlines is safest? Frommer`s guide mentions 1)Spicejet, 2)Goair, 3)Indigo. Any idea which one to prefer?

to be quite honest theres hardly any differance but we always leave atleased aday before so if any problems youll still be ok for your international flight makes less tiresome and we enjoy Mumbai only jet lite are rubbish in my eyes and ive not heard of them for a while but they are/were rubbish

Spicejet has had problems in the last few months. Jetlight has the worst record for cancellations last year.

Indigo had the best record last year for cancellations.

(Based on article read yesterday in TImes of India or Economic Times, cant remember which)

I don't think you could compare them so easily without all data points. I also read in many reports that Indigo is best among low cost airlines in terms of timeliness and least cancellation, Indigo even claims that in their advertisement but whoever recently traveled in Indigo specially from Kolkata would have different experience. The reason is their incapability to manage rush, I was about to miss my flight even after reaching airport 3 hours before schedule and reason is simple mismanagement of Indigo Checkin Desk. Fortunately our flight was just 45 mins late but I checked and found for same reason the day before it was 3 hours late.

Indigo falters in Kolkata, one reason being they have too many flights from here and Kolkata airport itself lacks a lot in infrastructure, where as Go-Air doesn't have even any presence in Kolkata. Even in a fog free day in Kolkata we saw cancellation of a flight bound towards another fog free city in Southern part of India just because the flight was coming from Delhi and it was hit badly by fog. So no easy way to ascertain who is best among three you mentioned, it depends on airport, timing of flight, season, flight routing and many other factors.

Choose by your convenient time and fare, you won't go wrong.

I think you are tempting fate its going to be the case of "Sods law" No airline make a point of being late but the more short trips they do then the more chance they have of being delayed and yes certainly the fog in Delhi this time of year dosent help as it leaves a back log at all airports around the area Also on some occations there will be fault with the plane and itll need attention there are a few that you can say are a little poor when it comes to check in ect ect but all airlines are fighting for business and being late or cancelled is not good business
for any airline so do you want to do and that is book the cheapest because thats what youll do and so you should
if not try kingfisher

May be this would make you feel better ... last year in July, I made 4 trips within India on Indigo (ex. Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Delhi). All the flights were on time.

As someone mentioned before me, Jet Airways and all its variants are a little lacking these days.
