Living in Delhi, Mumbai, Sikkim or Kolkata

Hi,

I get an offer from a Human Right NGO which offers me to work with them for 1 year. They ask me to choose 1 place our of 4 choice : Delhi, Mumbai , Sikkim and Kolkata..

I did some desk researches on these place and it is very difficult to choose from and I know it really depends on what i am looking for...as this is my first time to leave HK and live in another country and this is my first time to live in India ...so I feel very confusing.....

For city like Mumbai and Kolkata, I know I can get a glimpse of what India looks like and get more understanding about poverty and developmental issues which i am really interested in..but my concern is the cost of living, air-quality , water issues...

For Sikkim this is totally another expereince which is more peaceful and spirtual. I think the human right issues will be very interesting there as Sikkim is place with ethnic diversity...

I would like to know any comments on these 4 places....

Thanks so much!

I'm glad you mentioned this because choosing a place to live is such an individual thing. In terms of cost of living & air-quality, Sikkim wins hands-down over the 3 big cities. I've visited there several times b/c I love Sikkim, and lived in hotels where there were no water issues, so can't help you there.

Just know that while Sikkim is breathtakingly beautiful, it won't give you much opportunity for any things one would do in a metropolitan area. Which could be just fine if you're spending a fair amt of time working and love to hike, & enjoy natural beauty. You can always make trips to Kolkata if you want a change of pace.

For me, clean air & water trump all else but mileage varies...

Of the three metros, if it matters to you, Kolkata's the cheapest and most slow paced - Sikkm is obviously quite remote but perhaps you'd prefer that? All these locations are so different that it is largely a matter of taste and factors pertaining to your work I would guess. Best of luck!
