Is there a "Khao San Road" in Mumbai???

Hiya I will be travelling around India for a month alone this summer (July/August) and I land in Mumbai. I am 25 year old female. I am aware that India is a totally differnt country to Thailand where I have travelled before and I expect it to be very different. However, I was wondering if there was a main backpacker area in Mumbai where I could stay the first night to get myself settled in and where I can mingle with other backpackers? Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks

Not really the same, but the backpacker's area there is called Colaba, in the south. Its main street is Colaba Causeway.

ps Mumbai is overstretched and (relatively) overpriced on accommodation. Landing there, it's a good idea to book a room ahead for at least the first couple of nights. If you don't like it, at least you have a bed, and you can look on once you're there. Landing early helps if you want to do it on the fly, but it won't guarantee much. You'll find something, it just may mean a lot of scouting around, not really nice just after arrival.

Have you got yourself a guidebook yet? All this will be in there, and then some. A popular hangout here btw (and the cheapest, and may well be full at first) is the Salvation Army Red Shield Guest House. Not sure if they take reservations.

Thank you, much appreciated- I know it's gonna be a massive culture shock for me, I'd just like to be around other people going through the same thing. Many thanks again x

Well, now that I know where it is I will be certain to avoid it like the plague. The last thing I want is to go abroad in order to immerse myself with people from home..

Backpackers are not run of the mill tourists.

Heheh, it's sometimes nice to know where not to go yes

I haven't been to either place for quite some time, but I'd say while Khao San Rd. (should you ever need to get there, ask for Thanon Khao San -- Thailand obviously has no "roads") is more of a backpacker's ghetto per se (although there, too, it takes just a bit of strolling around to find yourself in the middle of Bangkok life), what's interesting about Colaba is it's more interspersed with day-to-day life, from the downtrodden poor to the amazingly affluent, and all walks of life inbetween. If... it's still like that. I reckon much of India is like that anyway, more so than some other places.

They seem like tourists to me, especially when they pull out their visa cards and laptops. But I'm a grumpy Old India Hand, so . . .
