Hotels in and around Chembur???

Really happy to find this incredibly interesting forum...thanks to all!

I'm planning travel to Mumbai in mid-November for a 2 week stay and would like to find a decent budget hotel - secure, clean, quiet, and in the 1500Rs per night range for double occupancy. Ideally I want to be in the Chembur area.

I've searched the forums for information about the Pearl Hotel in Chembur without luck and so I am wondering if anyone here knows about this hotel. Or are there other hotels in the area that might serve me and my companions better?

Many thanks again to all who make this place possible!!!

Best,

Michael

Chembur does not have a plethora of hotels. ( I live there...not in a hotel though )

You do know that it is a suburb? Any particular reason for staying there?

Would be the equivalent of Medford/Waltham (Since you are from Boston) in terms of commuting. But is connected by local train and buses.

There is jewel of india which is nice and probably in the 3500 to 4000 range.

Hotel Pearl will be pretty basic. If you want I can probably drop in there in the next few days and check it out.

there are a bunch of reviews on google

Can I understand why you want to be in Chembur? The reason being that if you want to spent most time of the day at Chembur then one option is for you to stay at Vashi/Navi Mumbai which is close to Chembur and across the creek. I think you will have cheaper and better stay options there.

Thanks for this Genesis...I'm smiling as I think of Medford and Waltham as having Mumbai equivalents...a small world!

With the help of these forums I'm learning that Mumbai is a 20 hour-per-day traffic jam...on a good day...and travel even over short distances takes time. I will be visiting the Chembur area and wanted to make it my base of operation for the 2 weeks I'll be there. We are assuming if we stay anywhere else it will mean long commutes which I want to avoid.

I saw the Jewel Hotel's website and it is well beyond what we are looking for...more posh and more rupees, etc. I would be grateful if you had the opportunity to look at the Pearl Hotel and give your assessment...and yes, it is the same hotel in the Google reviews you so kindly sent. We are a small group of friends (both men and women) traveling together and what we are looking for is the Indian equivalent of Motel6 - clean, secure, quiet, and reasonably priced. We're not kids looking for a hostel...we're here to discover Mumbai and enjoy it all.

And I am totally open to any other insights or direction you might have.

Many thanks!

Michael

Thanks Spicetrekker! Yes, I want to spend most of my day in Chembur and that area of Mumbai. How much time is involved in getting to Chembur from Vashi/Navi? Are there decent hotels in that area you could point me to...maybe even with websites?

Many thanks for your help!

So the Motel 6 analogy is fine. Only issue where it may fall apart in small hotels in India is expectations of cleanliness which is usually at a premium.

I will try and drop in on Sat and check it out.

My only other direction/insight would be to figure out the % of work in Chembur v/s discovering Mumbai before closing on Chembur.

Dont get me wrong, Chembur is a very nice suburb and very very safe (i moved back in a full circle after many years in Boston ) but is quite sleepy and relaxed and not near tourist hot spots.

Vashi/Navi Mumbai to Chembur is a short train commute (though it is technically another city). I however do not know enough about that area. In terms of similarity it would be like coming in from Nashua (only multiply the population by a few fold!)

If you have specific questions other Mumbai/Chembur feel free to contact me by email through this link on my site

(Since new members dont have PM privileges and I dont want to post my email here for spambots)
