Hotel in Mumbai in Feb.& more - thanx

Hi everyone

new to indiamike and first trip to india...about that time...
arriving in Mumbai second week of Feb, checked the Bentley's, the Shelley's in the LPguide, read about the pros&cons and lots more here in the forum(s)...this Residency Hotel might be interesting..(?)..but still it seems difficult to figure it out for a decent and cheap hotel.
Advice please!
Just need to book one before leaving that is mid-range and clean with private toilet, turkish or western style the same, I guess around Fort area or Colaba.
Please tell when you were there and the price also.
Thank you.

All other suggestions welcome.Hotel in Mumbai in Feb.& more - thanx Hotel in Mumbai in Feb.& more - thanx

Hi, freddiespex!

I was in Mumbai in November; we stayed in the Fort area, as we thought that the location was so central to everything, whereas Colaba is a bit far south to walk to everything (there are, however, plenty of buses, so that's not a big deal).

I won't try to recommend our particular hotel to you -- the Benazeer, right near the Regency -- as I get the impression that you'd want something a little more upmarket. I can tell you a little, however, about the Residency and Shelley's, as seen from the outside. The Residency is the swanker of the two, and is very like an American hotel both in appearance and in the way they do business. The main thing it has going for it is that location, right in the part of town where Thomas Cook, American Express and all the banks are.

Shelley's is in Colaba and fronts the water. If you could get a room with a water view, you'd be very happy, I think, but I suspect those rooms come at quite a premium (we were quoted around 1200 rupees for a double, but we never got around to asking if it had a water view; I suspect it didn't). The building itself beats the Regency hands-down for elegance and old-word character, but it's looking a bit tired nowadays, and the photo on the website makes it look, I think, a little better than the reality. The proximity to the water is nice, but it's quite far (being in Colaba) from the best market and the main railway stations. Since I like buildings with character, however, I would choose it over the Regency; and it is a couple of hundred rupees cheaper, too.

We never saw the Bentley, though we must have almost passed the door on our stroll through Colaba; all I know about it is that it actually occupies two or three different (but all nearby) sites, and some are better than others. That would probably account for the mixed reviews I have read here and elsewhere: some posters rave about it, others say it's a dump. We thought that the price they were asking in October was a bit steep for what was on offer, so we passed on that one. too. In fact, we passed on all three of them, but, I will admit, on seeing Shelley's, I wondered whether it mightn't have made a good alternative to what we finally settled on, and hang the extra three hundred rupees.

Not much help there, I fear, but maybe others with more knowledge than I will now chime in with something more useful.
