Question hotel in mumbai / baby

Hi!

We will be 3 adults and a one year old baby, arriving in Mumbai on the 14th of March 2007. We are looking for a budget hotel to stay for a few nights.
We don't want to spend too much (no more than 500Rps), but since we have the little one with us, we have a few requirements:
- clean! (like to have shower + toilet in the room, squat or western)
- we do NOT need airco
- central, or close to gateway of india
- clean / crowdy restaurant nearby

Normally we would just look for a place upon arrival, but with the baby, we prefer booking a place, or at least knowing where we are going.

Tips? Or links? (I already browsed the hotel list on this site)

Thanks a lot!!

GoanCanuck, yes, you are very right! I prefer having a bathroom in the room because of the little one! Anymore tips? Maybe something more middle class if 500Rs is unrealistic...?

One thing: As noted above Mumbai always was, and I hear still is, a difficult place to find a room, and arriving unprepared you may well have to accept something very different than you had in mind, at least for the first
night(s). Arriving later in the day naturally decreases your chances.

So with or without a baby, but certainly with one, I'd definitely book ahead yes. Scouting around with a kid on your hands is probably no fun.

It's also a relatively expensive place so I'm not sure about your budget. You may have to upgrade a little. The Salvation Army, also on the list above, has long been a favorite budget pick, they do private rooms I think, not sure about bathroom arrangements, contact them about it. See http://www1.salvationarmy.org/ind/ww...5?openDocument. I have only seen the dorms there and that quite some time ago, but you can expect it to be clean I think, and it keeps getting good reports. It's in Colaba which is one of the main tourist areas so you'll find plenty of restaurants and stuff around. The Gateway is just around the corner.

Babies just love to open their mouths and swallow that shower water, be careful.

We played a game with our baby, we wet a flanel with bottled water and covered her face with it whilst making out to be playing a game, the other person then washed the top half of the baby quickly, she always fell for it because she was biting the flanel to 'stop' us from taking it.

Your baby WILL get nappy rash, it's the heat, we tried everything to avoid it or heal it, and the only thing that worked was a 10 minute dip in the sea once or twice a day, but don't let the baby get sand on his/her hands, as the hands then go straight into the mouth. (this was in Goa, I don't think a dip in the sea in Mumbai would be wise)

(sorry if you already know all this, just trying to help.)

The Salvation Army's Red Shield Hostel at Mereweather Road is a good idea but only if you are in the private rooms and not in the dormitory. The rooms are at about Rs900 for a triple room but am not sure if the bathroom is attached. They do have three meals included in the price too. The double room is Rs600 also with three meals included. The single person price for a dormitory is Rs150 with breakfast included.

There is the Hotel New Bengal at Crawford Market that has rooms in the price range you want and also with attached bath but some of the rooms are quite small. I think you will find what you want here as far as facilities are concerned. A good, cheap and clean place usually used by families with two good restaurants inhouse too. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Aadil.
