"high tea" in Mumbai
"high tea" in Mumbai
anyone know where I can get a British style tea/high tea (tea, scones/biscuits) in Mumbai for a fairly low cost?
I am staying in Malabar Hill with a friend while in Mumbai but he hasn't been very communicative about local details/what to expect and I'll be on my own most days while he works
most of my agenda does not involve "Colonial" influence but I do love my teas...

sea lounge, taj mahal hotel
the sea lounge at the taj mahal hotel does wonderful high tea.
a bit pricy but worth the pleasant, relaxing experience. the room overlooks the water/gateway etc and you can choose from an abundance of teas and nibbles.

thx Mary actually that was the only one I had already found online...
so they are reopened?

I would suspect MOST of the other Upmarket Hotels and Restaraunts would have a High Tea setup with a Upmarket Price.
For a low cost affair, maybe try the Victoria train terminus, the
tea well be as good if not better than the Hotels. Not to sure if
you'll get a scone though, maybe a Club samosa.

Sea Lounge is five star. No idea of present rates, rough guess would be around 6/700 rupees a head if a buffet kind of thing.
I remember when unlimited cona coffee was eight rupees there. Almost the best place in Mumbai to take a girl out for a cup of coffee, in college days.
Sigh. (for both, the girl and the coffee)

Try the Tea Center at Resham Bhavan, next to Churchgate Station. It is the best place for all different kinds of exquisite teas as well as Indian snacks or even high tea with scones, cup cakes, etc. You can buy regular or gift packed tea from their shop as well. I just love the place for their tea as well as English breakfast too. This recently renovated restaurant is one of my favourite dining places as well. I am sure you will love it out there since the prices are not as high as five star hotels.

If you are coming from Malabar Hill, then take a taxi to Churchgate station and it is on the right hand side from the station building just opposite the Asiatic Stores and next to the Stadium Restaurant. It is the second building from the Churchgate Station building on the main road leading to the Marine Drive promenade. If you come from Marine Drive then it is the second building before the Churchgate station building. You may also try the ice cream at K. Rustom's across the street next to the Brabourne Stadium. The name of the building is Resham Bhavan and it is next to the Indian Merchants Chamber building on one side and the other you have another nice restaurant called Indian Summer.

Rs. 600 for a cup of cappuccino and a rather small piece of pastry... that was two years ago. The view from the lounge is excellent but it was freezing cold in the lounge (aircon) and not pleasant at all. Aadil, that tea center sounds lovely! I shall definitely try it when I visit in 2010. I was just reminiscing about K. Rustom's in another thread. Love their ice cream sandwiches! Yummy.
Here's a place a friend of mine said she's going to take me (Hotel Pali Hill,) next yr:

Looks nice. Doesn't seem like a high tea, per se, but she said the pastries and good, and the tea as well. Hopefully someone who has tried will weigh in.
The view from the Taj hotel is really nice, the coffee & snacks mediocre and expensive. I remember spending a lot of time there as a college student with my friends...lovely memories.

I'll try to get brave enough to venture out there (Churchgate) sometimes this week Aadil...

Hi CFPhotoGrafie,
I just spent a while reading your blogs. Very interesting indeed. The area around Churchgate is fun for a walk and getting lost in. If you then venture down to Marine Drive you can enter the Marine Plaza hotel (striding confidently, you will not be asked if you are a guest!), admire the Art Deco style, and then take the elevator to the roof where there is a swimming pool and amazing views all over Mumbai. We just went to take photos.
