Good bars in Bombay
Could anyone recommend any good bars in Bombay where it's possible to have a nice bottle of kingfisher?
Sorry don't know about bars, but the Leopold Restaurant in Colaba is a travelers hangout where you can get a cold one.
Cheers!
Cheers!
Now this is right up my alley!
I'm mostly only familiar with bars in South Mumbai, so if you are going to be spending time in the suburbs, I'd definitely recommend that you take a look at the Time Out Mumbai which has a nightlife section reviewing various bars around the city. It also lists a ton of places and can be a good resource.
As mentioned, Leopolds on Colaba Causeway is a major watering hole for tourists, backpackers and locals. There is a pretty well sized main room on the ground floor where you can get bottles of Kingfisher for Rs 160 or mugs of draft for Rs 80. They also have these towering pitchers that can hold up to 3 liters of Kingfisher, those come in around Rs 300 I think. Upstairs in Leopold is a more 'club like' area, which is dark and more cramped, although it does serve spirits and has AC which can be a plus. Sometimes the guys at the door downstairs can be a pain, but I don't usually have much trouble with them (friends of mine have alleged that they have an anti-Indian bias and prefer foreign customers).
A few blocks up towards Regal Cinema from Leo's is Cafe Mondegar, which has a similar M.O. as Leopold's, but is a bit brighter and cheerier in some respects, and has an eclectic juke-box in the main room. Pricing is the same for beer, I don't believe that they serve booze at Monde's. Just past Monde's (immediately beside Regal) is Sports Bar which is ok, but not my favorite place. They do have a lot of screens to watch the game on, and draft beer at similar prices to the others listed on this post.
I also like the Starlit Cafe in the Strand Hotel, near the Radio Club and a couple blocks down from the Taj (which has a lovely, but quite expensive, watering hole, the Harbor Bar). Starlit is on a roof deck on the top floor of the hotel and has nice views over the harbor as well as Kingfisher at around Rs 150. There's also Geoffrey's in the Marine Plaza hotel on Marine Drive which has an English-pub vibe, although I find it to be more of an after-work kind of bar than a happening nightlife scene. They do have a proper pint of draft Kingfisher for Rs 180.
Because it's the closest bar to me, I also sometimes go to Wink, the bar at the Taj President hotel in Cuffe Parade. It's more expensive than the rest of the bars mentioned (apart from the Harbor Bar), with Rs 180 for the smaller Kingfisher bottles, but it also has a wide selection of whiskeys and other spirits if you are in the mood, and it can sometimes be pretty happening with a more glitzy crowd.
Those are the bars I know best, but again I recommend checking out the Time Out Mumbai for suggestions as well. I know there are a ton of new bars in Lower Parel, which is not far from Colaba, and there are other loungey places like Red Light in Kala Ghoda and Ghetto in Kemps Corner that are supposed to be pretty good, too.
Hope this helps, and if you need a drinking partner you can guess who to PM!!

My Eating Out Blog blog
Time Out is an amazing magazine which helped me out alot in Bombay. OK, now that they've payed me to say that, I can continue.
Geoffrey's was my "local" during my stay on Marine Drive, as the bar was 50 metres away from my room. I always used to go there for lunchtime beers and start off my nights over there. Geoffrey's is my type of place really. Sit down, drink beer and watch whatever sport is on TV, whether cricket, rugby, soccer or hurling. The customer service there I have to say was amazing, and awesome being welcomed by my first name sure made me feel special. They also give you peanuts and these Indian corn chips things with salsa dip. They always top you off. It was great.
The Dome Bar was a few hundreds metres north of my hotel, and even though the Dome had above average variety of drink, it sometimes got a bit too windy if you didn't sit next to the edge. When cold beer gets into you and a breeze hits you, can sometimes get uncomfortable. Other than that, had a "too sophisticated" feel as I was with guys while visiting that bar. Perfect for a romantic drink though.
The Sports Bar I liked because it was open later than the other bars, plus cricket and soccer were on all the time, so if you had bad company, no worries. Was it just me, or were there too many males?
The Ghetto was alright, but I felt like I was trapped in the 80's. Was that the point? Other than that, I'm glad they had cobras there, and pool tables. Good service too. You can also graffiti on the walls if you'd like, and can request a texta/marker from the bar. That's the whole theme of the club I guess, that it's "ghetto" and trashy. I remember smoking pot with a local after I left, and headed straight south to the Starlit rooftop bar.
Starlit was pretty cool. I'm with two of my mates, and outside it's deserted. I ask what we are doing here, and they tell me to wait and see. I go up the elevator, and the time is around 2am, and elevator door opens and this rooftop bar is packed with foreigners. I can't really remember much of it, obviously intoxicated, and I couldn't go back the next day, because that very day I was leaving. But they sure did serve a mighty cold Haywards 5000, which was, mmm mmm.
Other than that, in the south, I went to places way up north such as Vie Lounge in Juhu. Good, great sunset views, but was just too far for me.
Also a bottle shop on Veer Nariman Rd, near the internet cafe. Just on the north-east side of Brabourne Stadium, in a little laneway. If you feel like having beers in your hotel room before going out for the night, that the place for your take-away needs. They gave me a free bottle opener! Amazing.
Other than that, I don't remember going to many more bars, but I will say that, even though I went to Geoffrey's by myself every single time except once, it was my favourite.

Also, Not Just Jazz by the Bay is also a great looking, suave place to catch a few beers and bands. You have to walk into the Pizzeria, which is on the corner of Marine Drive and Veer Nariman Rd. Go on a night when there are bands. The atmosphere is surprisingly "cool", and they have a good range of alcohol, and enjoyed a few Jameson's while enjoying a few riffs.

Bombay does not have a dearth of watering holes for sure. However, I do tend to hate some of the over-crowded bars. If you happen to know a member, an excellent place to go to would be for the Bar Night at either Wellington or Bombay Gym. The above places are pretty good too. Right next to Hard Rock is a place called Shiro and there is this new place Aurus next to the Vie Lounge.
Err - I hope this is not a coincidence. But is skinnylizard the same guy I once knew in a Talibanesque town called Rochester, New York on a university campus filled with solemn red bricks from the communist era known as RIT?
