Definitely not off topic!!! Someone (probably Amyl) should be along in a short time to give you some updates on where to eat in Navi Mumbai. So when are you coming down to Mumbai and are you coming for the CS/HC/IM meeting on the 11th June in South Mumbai at McDonalds opposite CST station and for a walk around the Fort area?

Cheers,
Aadil.

Thanks Amar! Will make a note of it.

Thanks for the efforts Aadil and Vibhu. This is a great thread

just curious...are those little open chaat places Mumbai is famous for "safe" for "foreign" consumption? I've been pretty luck so far in the other neck of the woods, so I assume so.

if u want to try chaat and at the same time ....u want to go easy on ur "foreignized" stomach ...then following are the places which might suit u....most of these places are very hygenic and u can clearly see the stuff being made in front of you:

1) currently a chaat festival is going on in Chetana at Kala ghoda 4 - 8 PM daily.
2) Swati Snacks, Tardeao ( though variety is less)
3) Samrat Cafe, just opposite Charni Road Station ( not a very high end place but is very hygenic and u can see the stuff being made in front of u.)
4) Kailash Parbat, Andheri West opposite to Infinity mall....dont confuse it with the one in Colaba ( Colaba one is not very hygenic)....
5) Soam, opposite Babulnath Temple near Marine Drive...not exactly typical Chaat but stil has gujrati type farsaans that can very well substitute chaat.
pity Mumbai dosent have any Haldiram Outlet like that of Delhi.

Well, I did not like the food once when I had some chicken dish and it was half cooked and pretty bland and not worth the name it is so famous for. The fish too was a bit stale and when I complained they just put their hands up in the air!!! I have had some good food here too, but not always!!! So I would not really recommend this place to the non vegetarians either!!!

Cheers,
Aadil.

There is Vithal Bhelwala which is near CST for the Bhel (farsan mixture) that it is famous for and then there are the famous Chowpatty Chaat Stalls that are not soooo clean but I guess it is alright once in a while and I know of foreigners who have had snacks out here without falling ill many times so you need not worry so much about the food here!!! You can also try the Rabdi Malai Kulfi there after the chaat to cool you down if it was too spicy!!! There is this place just outside the Churchgate station which has the food made right in front of you and it is called Satkar where you can have it made with plastic gloved hands!!! Then there is Elco's for it's Pani Puri at Bandra but there is another place just in front of it called Karachiwalla which is also good and clean (gloved hands here too). Chetana is famous and I have not had the chaat there but the food I've had there is pretty good. Also Swati snacks is a bit too hyped up and has exhorbitant rates for regular or standard fare!!! Hope you have a nice Cha(a)t here!!!

Cheers,
Aadil.

Soam was a major dissapointment. i was expecting some real tasty stuff. It was allright. i had some paneer makhani and chana maasala. which wasnt bad, but it wasnt great. had a mango lassi which was real good. misal pav not bad, but ive had better. The mung dal khichadi could be used to paint walls but not to eat. terrible.

overall, the place isnt bad, (the decor is weirdly minimalist for an ethnic food joint) but you could have all the stuff they serve much much better at other places.

Thanks again Vibhu and Aadil! Will make notes of the places you mentioned. Will keep your Soam review in mind too, Skinnylizard. Thanks

It is too bad that there's no Haldiram's in Bombay...I think it's originally from Nagpur, no?
