if you are into sea food at fort area and joints like mahesh lunch home, apoorna or trishna - do yourself's wallet a favour and go to pratap lunch home. a stone throw both from mahesh and apoorna, it's filled to the roof and the food is spectaculary good while 25-30% cheaper than at the neighbours. a beautifully prepared, king crab in pepper butter garlic sauce was 250rp only!!! we dined 3 times there during our 5 days in bombay, visited apoorna and mahesh and felt they were not any better.

Yes, that is true, Pratap Lunch Home is definitely much cheaper though the ambience may not be the same as Mahesh Lunch Home but then I guess if it is the food you are after then it should not really matter except for the fact that most people come here to drink and not just to eat, so you will find a few faces staring at you sometimes!!!

Cheers,
Aadil.

It is in the lane next to the Parsi Fire Temple just opposite the American Express Bank. It is in the lane where you have Bahar Cafe and Fort Central Restaurant. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Aadil.

Thank you aadil so much for suggesting pratap lunch home. In the late seventies Mahesh Lunch home was a modest eatery where my journalist friends from TOI went to drink & eat. Later on it became a hip joint.
There used to be an eatery called some thing like Gomantak mahasangh, as you travelled by train towards Marine lines from Bandra and got down at Grant road, crossed the over bridge on the right hand side, this eatery was just accross the road. The bombill fry, shell fish all washed down with Kokum sherbet.... just heavenly.
aadil bhaiya ever been there?

Not been to the one you are refering to but there are so many of these Gomantak places all over Mumbai that I guess it is impossible to visit each and every one of them!!! I do visit quite a few of them in the Dadar area as well as in other places as well, my favourites and pretty close to where I stay are Malvani Kinara opposite Portuguese Church and Saibini at Shivaji Park next to Shiv Sena Bhavan. They normally serve Solkadi which has kokum in it. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Aadil.

we still have very fond memories of pratap lunch home. i believe this is how all these hip places like trishna or mahesh used to look like in old days. whenever we went to pratap or just passed by it was just full, full, full. and yes, liquor is very cheap. the last dinner we've had there (my wife and me) - crab meat soups, king crab in garlic pepper butter, some garlic naan, a small bottle of gin, some tonic water and some plain lime soda, plus some kulfi.... the total bill was just a bit over 500 rp! and we were the only (white) tourists and all the waiters loved us!

Cheapest and Best Homestyle Malvani Seafood - Trupti Ahar

If you like Pradip lunch home at Fort, here is one thats even better for its homestyle Malvani coastal cuisine - Trupti Ahar at Parel - Jahangir Merwanji Street very near to KEM and Wadia hospitals. We discovered this place a couple of years ago and go there once every two months or so. Last Saturday we enjoyed their Prawns thali for all of INR 163 for two thalis. We had prawns masala, prawn curry, solkadi, rice, one plate with wade and one plate with rice bhakar, all washed down with Mangola. They also do various kinds of fish, mussels, crabs, chicken and veg varieties as well as the ubiquitous "Chinees", in fact another diner had a very delicious looking veg thali in front of him but then who wants veg when there is seafood around. This is a very basic, marginally bigger than Pradips, clean and decent place. Very satisfying and excellent value for money with a distinctly homestyle typical Malvani taste. Tel: 24132923 open till 3.30 for lunch and till 11 for dinner

Good restaurant near the airport but not in a hotel

Hi all,

Will have to spend 8 hours on Mumbai airport. Just wondering if somebody can recommend a decent Indian or continental restaurant near the airport which is NOT in a (five star) hotel.

Thanks

We had to kill 4 hours once at the airport and ended up eating at this place within the airport premises itself. Its near the parking, cant recall the name but its an open air thing and had a reasonable variety of food on the menu.

That was in Feb, not sure whether one can sit outside during this time.

There is also a rest/bar on your approach to the airport from what i remember. As you are driving in, it will be on the right on the opp side of the road. never been there though.

International or Domestic airport?

International airport
There is a CAfe Sahar on the main road coming from Andheri Highway leading to the Intl. airport - 5 to 10 min auto riksha drive away. The place is not fancy but the food is fantastic - Indian Mughlai style, and used to be very reasonably priced.

Domestic airport
Head to Vile Parle [East] station about 7 min drive away and look out for Ramkrishna Udupi restaurant which is very well known and justly famous - but vegetarian. They also run Shabri next door which serves non vegetarian. Indian / Chinese. Tasty food at a very modest price.

Since you have 8 hours, you can cross over to the West side, there is a good mid priced vegetarian restaurant Grasshopper in Vile Parle West just off SV Rd. Plenty of restaurants at all budgets in Juhu which is also not far away.

Im sure other members will give you better details but this is what I can recollect right now.
