I would second Amar's opinion. The roadside vendor has got a small shop now, however you still have to eat the dosas standing on the road.

Rs 12 to 18 in roadside eateries.

Rs 20 to 30 in non-air-con restaurants.

Rs 30 to 60 in upmarket joints

I would prefer any place in Matunga. I have stopped eating dosas in Mumbai after I ate my first Bangalore dosa.

Yesterday we lunched at Brittania and then followed it up with dinner at Koyla!!! We positively rolled out of the place like beach balls.... the food was great in both cases - Koyla a little pricey, but the boys loved the goanese fish curry and prawn pilau - a nice change from what we've been eating, great funky ambience too (what IS it with the hookah craze - had tea in some upmarket student hangout called cutting chai and they were all sucking madly away on them and in Koyla too - obviously the latest Mumbai fad?).

First night in after flight delayed 2 hours we had kebabs on the street at Bade Miyan - YUM! I wonder where we'll eat today??????? I have got so fat in India...

nonetheless ...the food was excellent.

The sheer variety of items served here was woooow

- Boondi Raita
- Dahi Bada
- Aloo dahi wale
- rajma & hari moong wali daal
- Masala Karela
- 2 other different kind of curries
- gujarati Daal
- Rajasthani daal Bati
- Kadhi

- Plain roti
- Kachodi
- Puran poli

- Plain rice
- Khichdi

- Dhokla
- Bhajiya
- innumerable variet of papads
- Maththa or chas
- 5 different kindof chutnies, salad and other accesories

Desserts:
- Jalebi ( the best i have had yet in Mumbai...apart from Soam's)
- Kheer ( was perfect ...its wasnt too sweet or less , just perfect)
- Gulab Jamun

For those who are water conscious ....this place provides complimentry Packed water ( well they charge 205 per head inclusive of taxes)
cant wait to get back there.
Just had a late Sunday lunch at Golden Star Thali - lovely and interesting, hadn't had Gujurati before, we found it VERY sweet compared to the food we've been eating around Rajasthan/Delhi .. delicious, but sugary... the sweet made my teeth ache!!!! Anyway it was great to try new stuff and we enjoyed it, even though it was hard to find (I only had the info from here - Charni Rd, it's near a train station but which one? Can you post the address so people can find it.. thanks for the tip again 4/4 on this thread already - full marks so far!

This thread has been the best - every recommendation was spot on. We also ate at Mahesh Lunch Home, Copper Chimney, Yazdani bakery - he made us try everything in the place, the Brun Maska is amazing dipped in Chai... Bade Miyan a couple more times, JP and Oscar ate at Basilico - OK, but not up to Sydney Italian standards, great roadside stall stuff - don't know the names...

He says it is only open 4-7 so it sounds like your man - in the book the name is Borkar, but this could be changed. HEs ays there is a big queue - then he describes eating it bite by bite... mmmm

Although - the vadapav does sound rather HOT... I do hope my inability to eat REALLY hot food doesn't interfere with my desire to experience India through my tummy and taste buds.

When comes the turn of the humble vada pav? The veggie burger for the budget connoisseur....

If you manage to find him on your own, you deserve a medal

Sadly we are back and we never found him unfortunately - but we did have a vada pav or 2 (or 3) - delicious, as was all the street food, I only wish I could have got the names of everything we ate but between the language difference and the accent it was too hard! The only thing I knew for sure was a vada pav and delicious masala corn cobs on the beach at Chowpatty...

I also have some great footage of the daredevil boys 'powering' the ferris wheel at Chowpatty - might pop it on U Tube once I've edited it.

Thankyou so much for all the restaurant tips you guys, it was great... we loved Mumbai, people in India were so negative when we told them we had 4-5 days in Mumbaim we could have stayed much longer.

Avid Trekker - didn't end up getting in touch re the tabla - too busy eating - not really, but he had already had several sitar & tabla lessons along the way and we were really busy in Mumbai just loving the city.

REAL Chinese?

Hello fellow foodie brethren,
I've read through this thread and have not found anyone raving about any of the places that serve Chinese...I really really like authentic Chinese, and I am wondering if there is a venue that serves such fare in Mumbai. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I'm not totally loving the Indian tasty extravaganza- I am - I just find myself craving certain spice combos now and then...
I feel I run a risk of being booed off the thread for asking(yes, I know I'm in India), but I'm really missing Chinese flavors!
-yearning-for-fermented-bean-paste-ly-yrs,
e.

p.s. while I'm at it, is there anyone out there who knows of an east Asian food shop/market? I could just as easily scratch the itch at home but I can't seem to find schezuan peppercorns...heheh

you can get close to some authentic Cantonese fare at Royal China in Bandra and in Colaba (near Sterling off the Deutsche Bank bldg)

if you would like something with an Indian twist try China Garden.
Shangai Club at ITC Grand is also good stuff though fairly high priced (meal for INR 2000 +)

also Oriental Blossom at Marine Plaza is a good option.
