I understand that there is a regular ferry service from the Gateway of India in Mumbai to Alibaug.
Can some one tell me the frequency of this service and when the first & last sevice commence.
Thanks.

Hi,

Regular ferry service is available from Gateway and Bhau-cha-dhakka for Mandwa, except the monsoon months.
You can find all the related info on this site

Hope it helps

Thank you so much anindya911. I was thinking of spending the week end break 26th., 27th. Jan at Alibaug & return to mumbai on 28th. & then fly back to Delhi. Do I need to book accomodation in advance? In case you have any other suggestions for similar places I would love to hear them.

The weekend of 26th is long one and you can expect more than usual crowd in every tourist gateway, including Alibaug.
It would a good idea to book your accomodation in advance. There are hoards of Hotels, Resorts (some of them are only two room bungalows )and homestays available. Try a bit of google-ing for more info.
Along the same coast Nagaon, Akshi or Murud-Janjira could be other options.

Does the ferry from Mumbai to Alibag run in September? Is that considered a monsoon month? The links given above don't give specific months... and searching various sites gives a variety of non-running dates ranging from June through to mid-August and all the way up to October.

Mostly the Ferry service resumes during the end of August, however it is dependant on severity of the Monsoon and sea conditions.
One can enquire on the phone nos given in the website.

Cheers

Depends on the weather and how stormy the seas are at that time. Better to check on the phone for the latest sailing status.

An update on this: the ferries are running, we took one to Mandwa a few days back for 110 Rs. Quick journey and bus service on to Alibag included in the price.

Moving on to Murud from Alibag proved more challenging, as the bus to Murud simply refused to arrive. After two hours since the bus was supposed to leave, a group of friendly ladies with children also heading to Murud thought "sod it", grabbed us with them, and jammed us (13 persons altogether) into a large rickshaw to Murud. The kindness of strangers!

Vasko,

We are thinking of spending the weekend begining 10th Oct in Alibag. We will reach Mumbai only around noon on the 10th. Will it be possible for us to take a ferry the same evening or wait till the next morning to take one? The other option is to hire a car for the same evening and reach in the night.

I would welcome your advice/information/suggestions in this regard. Ideas regarding accommodation would also be helpful. We are a middle aged couple.

Thanks in advance,

GPI.

Hi GPI,

I only have my memory to rely on here, so don't take this as absolutely correct info. But as far as I can recall, the ferries operated approximately from around 9 AM to 5 PM.

Are you flying into Mumbai, coming by train, or...? This will affect your plans. The ferry tickets are readily available at the booths right next to the Gateway of India and also leave from there.

Regarding accommodation, we only passed through Alibag, so unfortunately I can't give you any suggestions on that.

Thanks.

Vasko,

Thanks very much for your advice.

As of now, we have decided to leave on 11th morning by the ferry. I was trying to avoid the big city and spend an extra peaceful night in Alibag!

My contacts in Mumbai are looking at accommodation. Hopefully they will find some place nice.
