Dog barking deterrent: where to buy?

Hello,

Having a very vocal dog in the building opposite to mine, spending its night expressing its thoughts, I am looking for a dog barking detterent such as those found here. Specs would be:
- collar not an option as dog is not mine (and owner is not very cooperative to say the least);
- as long range as possible (I am on 5th floor)

I have asked my watchmen to have it stop but to no avail, and the pet control squad from BMC will most likely not act as this is not "officialy" a stray dog (in fact, it is but my neighbor put a collar on it and feeds it all days)

Any idea as to where I could find this in Mumbai (preferably south)? I know there was a pet shop at Kemps Corner but not sure if it is still here...

Cheers
Thomas

Gosh, so many high tech options!

When I had such a dog, I got a high-pith whistle in UK. Didn't have the chance to test it though, as the dog had moved out before we got home. Then we moved out.

Oddly enough, was in that street yesterday, and the dog has come back!

A low tech solution from our illustrious founder , IndiaMike :

I also carry balloons but not as gifts. At night in small towns when the dogs take over on night patrol barking all night long I fill them balloons up with water and have my own war with the them.

If you have ever seen a guy standing on a balcony in his underwear throwing water balloons at barking dogs it was probably me. It's a less cruel approach of getting rid of the barking dogs and I never hit them but just throw them close enough to scare them off (the buckets in the bathroom are great for holding the ammo).
Not that I´m advocating the solution in this case , if the dog has a working relation with a neighbour it could come back to bite you .. metaphorically.

The fact that I used to shout and my neighbour's dog, and shout at them when it barked (it really was bad!) actually didn't stop us having some sort of neighbourly relationship!

Funny place, this....

Ear Plugs.. I don't go to bed in India without them. If its not the dogs barking, its the mosque/temple at 5 am anyways.

Eear plugs are already on, but due to very thin window glass (as usual around here), prove ineffective (barking is really a low-pitched, wave king of thing!).
Balloons are tempting but could lead to some counter action from the watchmen or bypassers (dog barks mainly when a car is going by in the middle of the night, which occurs about 2 or 3 times per night). Also, as I have my own car parked around there, a counter action escalation on the car is plausible.
Any other suggestion?

Cheers

a neighbour's dog whined all night long, every night. we suspect another neighbour found a solution - the dog was found poisoned to death one morning. life in semi-rural india for you (don't even think about it where you are)!

the whistle idea sounds perfect - if it works..

Speaking as a dog lover: I think the device you're talking about is a collar (so why do you think it is not a collar that would give you remote control to the 5th storey?) that gives an electric shock whenever the dog yelps. It's said to be effective, but I also consider it cruel, and I wouldn't be surprised if you're left with a neurotic dog. To any dog owner, some decent training should replace this. If you are not up to that, don't take a dog. And then they'll still all have their own characters, so it's unpredictable no matter what you do.

Since it's not your dog, you may not care; I also wonder how you plan to put it on him let alone keep him to wear it though (and in a place like Mumbai!) I wonder if this thread is serious, for that matter.

Anyway, maybe learn to live with the fact that you've moved to a place where there are yelping dogs around. That's what they do.

And to answer the question, if such hi-tech solutions cooked up by some creeps are available there, I truly don't know. If I were a scientist I should hope I'd have put my mind to more pressing issues.

ps I don't think the whistle will work no; those are sold as communication tools with your dog, rather (high pitch, right, and you know what they say about their hearing). I've never seen them work, but they might with very well-trained (hunting) dogs. I don't think they'll scare them off or shut them up in any case, if anything they would draw their attention, that's what they're designed for.

@anar: I obviously don't want to come to such extremities; as for whistle (ultrasound I guess), it involves getting up, taking it to the window and blow till either dog or you gets fed up... One should be pretty much awake at that time

@machadinha: there are different kind of collars; indeed, the most basic (and ancient) ones used to give electric shocks, new ones prefer some chemical spray (all naturel, I think some citrus extract). As mentioned, this is not MY dog, but that of a not-so-well educated neighbour who lets her dog spend all night outside, in the street; that's why the collar option will probably not do, unless the housing society can give this person the alternative between that and keeping the dog inside during the night.
There have been complaints from other persons, so this is not just me I do love dogs myself (otherwise I would probably have recoursed to a good ol' lathi on that one), but I do not think this should interefere with the fact of sleeping only 3-4 hours per night...
Cheers,
Tom

I have a feeling this is going to turn out to be like that Seinfeld episode where Elaine gets Kramer and Newman to kidnap the barking dog nextdoor, and dump it in the country.

As a pet owner, I had to wake up quite often to silence my dog. I did not use a whistle or a collar. Mine was a slightly unethical but harmless method. I used to grab his...and release.

The barking would stop! Of course I never repeated it too often! Else the shock value of this method would die soon.

I bought the 'Super bark free' from a shop in London, it worked fine until the batteries melted inside it, not a peep out of the pack of strays that lurk my compound at night. When enquired about buying one in india, the man in the pet shop was horrified that i could even contemplate electronically gagging them, "best watchmen you can get" he said, maybe he's right as i had to fire my watchman for bringing his mattress and blanket.

You'll have to buy it online.

Its not going to be easy to find. The dog market in India was pretty disorganized till a while ago and some of the things , such as this collar, have still not found their way to the markets..atleast not in Delhi.

Here's a previous thread about keeping dogs at bay.....

Gone to the dogs...

Don't know that it will help much in your case. If the dog in question is in the building opposite then anything based on a device is not likely to be that useful as I'm presuming the dog is too far away (can you actually see this dog). We have an unltrasonic dog chaser (below) which has been quite useful in moving some of the dog fights from directly out in front of our place - to down the road. Also good for keeping the monkeys at a distance!
