We are in Mumbai on 2nd and 3rd November, leaving on the 4th - can anyone suggest the best way to enjoy Diwali?
I understand it doesn't happen in one place or at one time so I really need your help!

if you go before diwali, you could visit dharavi to see how the potters make clay lamps, called diyas.

No matter waht you do, wear clothes that do not catch fire easily, or stick to your skin if they do. Cotton is best, all synthetic materials are worst. Do not wear any flowing garments, or exercise abundant caution.

you could buy your own crackers, and set them off. That is fun generally, for an hour or so and more if you have a group, and have never done this before.

you should lookout for residential areas, and wander around on the day of the festival. Beware that firecrackers are set off at both ground level and skywards. some of them have delayed action ( just a few seconds ). Marine drive will have some sky fireworks, so that could be something to do in the evenings.

At night, some of the houses are lit up with lamps. This is eco-friendly way of celebrating diwali, not sure which places will do this, but it could be said that at least some houses in any locality you choose would have this done.

The net is abuzz with pointers to cadell road, where some spectacular lanterns are sold, so if you are a fan of that, there it is. http://www.gspatel.com/Mumbai/Diwali-Lanterns

some suggestions are at this link : http://www.tripadvisor.in/ShowTopic-...harashtra.html
