Smile day trips or overnight trips from mumbai?

I have just managed to get a friend to look after my children for 10 days in November so I can meet up with my husband in Mumbai where he will be doing some work. I have never been to India and was hoping to get some advice on where I could go on my own while he is working (Mon to Fri) and if there are some great places we could go together on the weekends - not too much travel time out of Mumbai. My time is very restricted I arrive on Fri nt from Australia and I am then leaving 9 days later on the Sun nt. ( I am a female, early 40's.) Any ideas??

You could try out the Empower Activity Camp, based in a small village on Bombay - Goa Highway. It is about 3 n' half hours drive from Mumbai and a lovely, quaint little village with lots of rolling green plains and now with the monsoons on, all you see around is lush green foliage and not to metion the breath-taking waterfalls dotted along the route. Empower Camps also has a lake and a small hillock on their campsite where one can go either for a nice swim, river crossing or kayaking. A trek up the hill is beautiful. Check out their website: www.empowercamp.com or Today's DNA - West Coast - loads written there.
Enoy!

If you want the Hills then you can check out, Matheran or Lonavala. They can be much pleasant and cool compared to Bombay heat. Both just 2 hrs travel from Mumbai. If you like beaches then some of beaches along Konkan coast Ganpatipule, Murud/Janjira.

I was there in Kashid just a few days ago and found the beach pretty isolated but there was not much sand on the beach!!! Full of stones and shells but not much sand to walk on!!! I wonder why!!! Instead of Kashid I would suggest the Nagaon beach which is much cleaner, just clean sand and pretty safe too. Not too many good hotels there so that is a problem (I think I saw just one good one called Samira Palms) but if you stay in a small homestay or cottage as they are called in the area then you should be able to manage for a good place for about Rs400 per night for a double room with attached bath. The place I stayed at was approved by the MTDC and called Yashoprada run by Mr. Prakash Naik. Food is just Rs125 for a non vegetarian thali which includes two types of fish (Fried pomfret and prawns gravy), rice and bhakri/rotis. Fantastic cuisine if you are interested in fish!!! Their vegetarian fare was also pretty good. You can go to Murud and Janjira Fort which is in the middle of the sea and is really worth visiting. The beach in Murud is also pretty good so you could also stay in Murud. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Aadil.

I was in Nagaon beach and Kashid last April. I liked Nagaon beach which was more cleaner than Kashid beach.

Thanks for your advice

Thanks all for the suggestions. I was just about to book the Prakruti Resort at Kashid and saw your message. The good thing about Kashid is being able to go by boat from Mumbai. How do you get to Nagaon Beach, and how would I book accommodation?

The hill stations look great - esp. Matheran, but my researching showed it was a pretty difficult place to get to from Mumbai esp in terms of time...and I need to fly home on the Sunday night after the weekend away.

Also back on Kashid - is there anything there other than the beach? And with the boat - do you need to book that?
Really appreciate the help.

Samira Palms

Is it a resort / hotel ?

I found this on the net. Looks it's villas for outright sale.

'THE VILLAS' offers a premium scheme of semi detached Villas at Samira Palms located 750 meters away ( a 5 minute walk) from the Nagaon Beach. ...

Ronak, - Samira Palms is a property developed by Samira Constructions for pvt housing.

Sandy - You can visit the Murud fort from kashid, you need not book in advance. You get boats leaving gateway of India at regular intervals. One more place which you be a good bet would be Murud at Golden Swan Resort.. (though never tried it my self) visit www.goldenswan.com/beachresort/html/index.html

Cheers

Sorry about the Samira Palms goof up, and like I mentioned in my earlier post, I said I 'thought' it was a resort with the way it was advertised over there. I did not see the property so I could not tell.

Nagaon is easily accessible from Alibag by autorickshaw which will take you about 15 minutes to reach and about Rs75-100 if you hire a private rickshaw or Rs7 per person if you go by the larger shared Minidor rickshaw which seats about 10 persons. When you take the ferry from Apollo Bunder to Mandwa, there is a free bus service to Alibag arranged by the ferry service. The PNP Catamaran service is much better than the Maldar Catamarans. It costs more but also offers an airconditioned cabin with plush seats unlike the open journey with plastic seats that move about on the deck and the sea water splashing on you even when the sea is not so stormy!!! You need not book in advance as there is no seat numbers provided and it is a first come first serve service with last minute payments also accepted on board the catamaran. The price on the faster PNP Catamaran's airconditioned cabin is Rs110 and the top open deck seats are Rs80 whereas on the Maldar Catamaran it is Rs80 for the main deck and Rs100 for the top deck. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Aadil.

Thanks for the Nagaon info Aadil.
Are this cottages / home stays closer to beaches or at a distance ? Is prior booking necessary or we can have a look at the place & check in ?
