Budget ho(s)tels, meeting fellow travellers

I'm looking for a budget ho(s)tel <800 rs in Mumbai. I prefere one that also good to meet other travellers. I know the salvation army is good from previous posts, but since I arrive in the late afternoon I don't want to put all my hope on that.

Any other suggestions? I actually prefer one that can be pre-booked. Since it is my first time to India I'll probably be overwhelmed the first few hours. Not the best state to go look for hotels.

You may checkout, Apollo guest house just behind the Taj Hotel.

You could try the City Palace hotel. It's conveniently located opposite Victoria Terminus. It's full of backpackers. I myself haven't stayed there but have seen a room or two. Those I saw were tiny but I seem to remember that the price was under 850 (this past December). They do have a homepage (google it). They do accept bookings as far as I know.

December is high season - this time (European summer) rooms should be cheaper.

Try Carlton hotel just a block away from Salvation army on the same street. Excellent hotel with a big verandah where you can sip on a cold beer!
