Hotel Lawrence is a good choice in Budget category. It's in South Mumbai near Colaba, close to tourist sites and heritage district.

If you want a be in the touristic area of colaba near the taj and gate of india then you have 2 budget choices which I recommend you.
One is SALVATION ARMY RED CHIELD HOSTEl. and the other is INDIA GUEST HOUSE near radio club. Both are for backpackers and they are great for not wasting a lot of money just in accommodation. Try them...they are not that bad though the salvation army people are a bit strange. I absolutely recommend you India GUest House in Colaba.
Wish this serves you.

Get yourself a hold of any of the major guidebooks. You can get several at the library for free to compare. They'll likely be not the latest editions, but the general info doesn't change much.

Lawrence has just a few rooms and is always full though. Note they have only rooms with shared bathroom. If wanting to stay here, calling ahead is a must: 022-22843618. I was quoted around Rs. 500 for a single room here earlier this year. It's something of an old backpacker's institution, but I've never actually stayed here so can't comment. Not seen the rooms; friendly staff alright it seemed. I think breakfast may be included with your room btw.

I would suspect it's not a bad choice; it also puts you just outside of silly touristy Colaba, and in the more interesting and far less hasslesome (in terms of touts) Fort area instead. Both are a stone's throw away from each other though, should you want to avail the former's amenities.

Hm, yes. One of the cheapest options in town alright. Their dorms (around Rs. 150-200 or so? Ridiculous price for a dorm of course, but, that's just what Mumbai room prices are like) are popular with young ultra-budgeteers; that's probably fine if that is what you are, it no longer is with me. They have a few private rooms, we had a double with no frills whatsoever earlier this year for around Rs. 600 I think. "Private" bathroom across the hallway, making it not all that convenient. (With some scouting around there are again simple rooms, most of them with shared bathroom in this class I think, to be had in town for around Rs. 500, so it's really not the best of deals. For anything like a decent if otherwise not overly exciting and still decidedly budget double room in town, with private bathroom and TV and possibly A/C, count on something like Rs. 1000 and upwards. Yes, it's an expensive city; similar rooms elsewhere may cost you around Rs. 350. Mid-range here could then go up to several thousands.)

Staff here (to get back to the Red Shield) are out to scam the many newbies who arrive (just for small change, the usual having no change when you're paying for your Rs. 190 bill and stuff), and otherwise couldn't give a toss about their customers' well-being. Dreadful place really.

Still though, I spoke to many a young backpacker here who praised it for the opportunity to hang out with fellow travelers and such. To each their own, and all that. I found staying in their dorms, fairly depressing multi-bunk bed kind of affairs btw, quite alright when I was younger, too; besides, financially I had little option but to anyway. (A detail I didn't remember though is visiting people in some of those dorms now, some of them at least have their bathrooms inside those rooms. Sleeping at that end is, ahem, not recommended if you can avoid it shall we say.)

Find them on the web here: http://www.salvationarmy.org/ind%5Cw...5?openDocument. While they claim to be in Fort there btw, they are firmly in Colaba. Note they don't take reservations for their dorms, but it is rumored they do for their rooms. They're likewise eternally full (reserving ahead if you can is a good idea in Mumbai anyway. Accommodation here is not just expensive but also tight, itself jacking up the prices again one assumes.) What one needs to do here is show up at check-out time, 9 AM or so, then hope a bed becomes free.

A none-too exciting buffet breakfast and lunch is included here btw. Or for the rooms anyway; possibly at a minor premium for the dorms. Oh, note there's an idiotic midnight curfew here, leading to nightly rituals of all those kids whose money they nonetheless accept and run on showing up later of course & being let in but only after plenty a lecture by these smug Christians whenever they find it convenient to remember their beliefs, and many a threat about how they'll all have to leave first thing in the morning.

Did I mention I found it a dreadful place? In fact I left here after plenty a fight with the staff about how they were treating others & asking for the complaints book, the only time I ever did in India I think.

.
I have stayed there twice - great location and value. Used to be listed in LP.

Equidistant from Colaba and CST. You must book. Whenever I have just turned up (even in the summer off-season) I have been turned away. Oh, in the same alley (Sai Baba Marg I think its called)there is a sensational if slightly pricey seafood restaurant.

Yup, that's the street. Thanks for the restaurant tip, I didn't know that. Will keep in mind

There's a synagogue on (or just off) this street that's worth visiting too. Friendly and quiet (and very pretty) place, no hassle whatsoever.
