Broadband in South Mumbai query

Hi all,

I had posted a similar thread some months ago but things are changing so fast here that I thought it could be worth to relaunch the thread.
So I am looking for a broadband connection in the Malabar Hill (Carmichael Road) area, with the following specs:
- 1 or 2 Mbps (512k could be ok if unlimited);
- unlimited in number of hours;
- unlimited in download amount (or very high limit, such as 10 GB per month);
- decent pricing (I have seen an offer that would match the above three criteria with MTNL, but for an absolutely ridiculously high price).

Any idea? I have seen Exatt could be ok; how is this ISP?

Cheers

Tom

Broadband in true sense is quite expensive in India, better option would be to go for 256-512kbps unlimited connection from either MTNL or Airtel. Do you need this connection for home or for business purpose and how much is your budget?

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India defines “Broadband” as 256kbps and above connection. If you want “real broadband” connection then you can get a 2mbps DSL connection from MTNL with 16 GB free data transfer for Rs.9999 a month and 2mbps connection with 70 GB data transfer for Rs. 42999 a month!

Source: http://mumbai.mtnl.net.in/triband/htm/tariff.htm

Nick you want a "broadband" connection?

Yes, I want a broadband connection!!!!!

That definition is utterly ridiculous, isn't it! Oh well...

This is what I could get from BSNL in Chennai, and I have the HOME900 plan: 256K with unlimited upload/download for Rs900 a month

OK, 256K is enough for most browsing, really, and it works most days.

But it is an absolute joke when compared to the rest of the world.

Even if I had a high[er] speed connection, there is a real bottleneck (caused I believe, by BSNL being dependent on buying not-much international bandwidth from VSNL) and I don't know how much it would improve the actual performance, most of the "web" being in US, Europe and other countries.

Its better than nothing. Its good enough even to listen to BBC streaming audio when I feel like it. I don't do well on video stuff, though, so you-tube etc is something I have to mostly forget about.

Can people on DialUp connection have high speed internet
that is better than 512 K -- that is 5Mbps - 7Mbps ?

Or this speed (above 1Kbps) is only possible with cable connection?

The reason I am asking is that the place we are moving to has posibility of only dial up connection (I dont think cable has reached there, yet)

I will be in India for the first time next month and can't wait but internet access is a big issue for me. I will be bringing my laptop & will need to go online every few days at least. I know I could try to seek out internet cafes in the city's I end up in, but hotel accommodation with wireless access would be so much handier.
Can anyone tell me if wireless in hotels is widely available?

Or even better, is there any service I can buy that will give me wireless access while traveling north India, cost is not an issue (well it really is) but any suggestions are welcome.

Hm you'd be stuck with a 56k modem no even if it were technically feasible? I think you'll need cable/DSL/ISDN.

You would need cable or ADSL service to get high speed internet. The maximum speed that you can get in Mumbai is 512 kbps. To get 5Mbps - 7Mbps you will have to stay in Canada.

There is a 2Mbps available in certain parts of Mumbai but it costs a LOT. About $1000/month.

i for one am not complaining. it sucks but when you have people basically downloading movies, music, and software all day, there has to be some kind of a curb on it somehow.

anyway. i was using Sify Broadband but im switching to Mtnl Triband , the other options really are hathway, igate etc.

I understand frustrations of IMer people with the speed limitations in India - I just looked up and tested internet speed here - it is more than 5Mbps.

Allows me to watch tv channels and use internet at the same time and using wireless router. By george ! $1000 per month is unbelievable...

I guess the best option would be to either get a Reliance phone with internet connection facility or buy the Reliance net connect cards. It not the fastest way to access internet, but you can do it in most of the cities in India, for more check out this link http://www.reliancecommunications.co..._rconnect.html
