Live in Dharavi and learn about the people who thrive in the city within the city.

I've touted "Maximum City" pretty hard! We'll worth your time. It was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in nonfiction.

I suppose the first question is, Is it your first time in Mumbai? After you get all of the obligatory tourist things out of the way, then you can really start to get to know and appreciate the city. Mumbai to me is like many other Megalopolis's? in that it is MANY cities in one and that each part is separate and distinct yet part of the greater whole at the same time.
I would check out a paying guest situation if you decide to stay there the entire time. When are you going? Maximum City is a great book, but I think you appreciate it more after having spent time in Mumbai first, if you know what I mean. See if you can get the film Bombay...(about the comunal riots in 1992) |

Thanks for the advice about the book.
Actually I spend only two days in Mumbai a few years ago, and thats far too less. And I havent seen very much of it. But next year I will go there for my internship for 6 months. I want to know what the real Bombay feeling is. I don't know how to explain exactly but in a way Bombay is fascinating to me (and I only spend 2 days there). I want to explore everything of Bombay (and not only the touristic sites), but what is Bombay that you fascinates? Is it a feeling that you can describe? In a way I really don't understand that the slums are so large in Bombay even near the centre, and that the rich and wealthy are just so close. |
