Hi
I was looking for some ideas. My wife and I are visiting Mumbai next week. And we will be staying over my birthday on the 24th. I love my food, and i am always in search for the best kebabs and samosas etc. England can be pretty poor with many of the restaurants and cafes selling prepared frozen kebabs. I'm looking for fresh and the best. Any ideas. I have read all the posts on the eating places elsewhere on this site, so i have a few to try. We are spurlging and staying at the Taj President - any must eat at places - we dont mind street food, as long as its good and clean. Also we would like to visit the Horse racing event which is on the 24th which has been described as the indian "royal ascot". Any one been? is it just for the rich and famous or can we go along pay on the day? thanks in advance ![]() |

Try the kebabs at 'Bade Miyan' - a street side stall behind the Taj. He's been there ever since I existed and his patronage has only grown over the years. He sets up his stall in the evenings and will leave you 'dreaming' for more.
Cheers. |

As you at Colaba one option would be Badey Miya ... behind the Taj.. it something to die for alternatively you can try Kyber at Kala Ghoda the food is awesome...
Of the two... badeymiya is a road side stall quality is good but it in the open... other option Kyber is a Grade A restaurant. Cheers |

Thanks a lot, I will certainly try the ones suggested. Are somasas big in Mumbai as a speciality, any stalls or places that you would recommend?
My family was origianlly from Gujarat, so i grew up with lots of dhal and rice in England. Sadly my mum is no longer with us, but I have never tasted dhal as good as my mums (i know everyone says that). Anyone recommend the best place for gujarti food. It wont be as good as my mums but it would be nice to sample some of the best. I know there are so many dhals. But generally where to go for the best gujarti dhall and food - such as patras, and dhoklas, methi theplas etc. I want to revisit my youth! thanking you in advance ![]() |

Hello Singinauditor,
Since you will be at the taj president, go to Camy on Colaba causeway for your fix of dhokla & samosa they have a vareity of farsan & mithai. For Samosa & chat you can try them at Kailash PArbat on Colaba causeway. Also you can go to Suryoday store @ churchgate for dhokla & patra. enjoy mani |

BAde Miyan is great!!! It's hard to find although it is right behind the Taj... just keep asking and then its a little confusing working out how to give your order.. They have also started a sit down place in the building opposite and they bring the plates in to you - we sat down for a bit and waited the first time but it was very hot and noisy so we ended up on the street leaning against someone's car with everyone else... We only had rolls though.
Copper chimney is also great (more expensive) and you can walk from where you are too... Oh and for Gujurati Thali - Golden Start Thali on Charni Road next to a railway station.... Address for taxi driver anyone? And we had a lovely meal at Koyla on top of the Gulf Hotel - also in Colaba... probably not fantastically authentic food but a really nice chilled and groovy rooftop, quite smart and really tasty food. |

The "Samrat Restaurant" near Churchgate Station serves amazing Gujrati Thali's. Excellent cuisine. I think they charge about Rs. 150/- flat for an unlimited thali's. Some thing you should definitely not miss!!!
Location wise also this will be excellent since you shall be staying at the Taj. It is just a 10 minutes drive. |

You can also try barbecue nation in bandra.
It used to be about Rs. 400 per person. Unlimited food .. which includes starters (kababs etc) Great food .. excellent value for money. But if you are going on a SUnday .. its better to make a reservation. Happy Birthday [ ] |
