Big Western Mattress

Where can I buy a big king sized western mattress and box spring in Mumbai?

Just so that there aren't any misunderstandings, here is a picture of what I mean:

I just bought a new bed, and I didnt see anything like that available! you seem to be able to get only thinner harder matresses, I tried an Indian made 'western style' spring one but it was totally useless and was returned. The plain foam and coil matress is better anyway.

However flash hotels seem to have them, so they must get them somewhere. Better get your cheque book ready though.

WoW! This sure is a mother of all mattressses !!

Doesnt one just bounce off when turning to the other side??

I found the "thin" mattresses at the Residency Hotel (Fort Area, D N Rd) extremely comfortable...stayed there a month once. I was thinking must ask the hotel where I could buy the same type......must call them soon........

My interior designer is telling me to go to ikea in Dubai and ship everything in a container. I'm not amused.

I know just how you feel... my mattress has come with me from UK!

I guess that the problem is the Indian sleeping tradition: a hard cool surface.

I doubt whether you get such matresses at IKEA... what about buying two slim and comfortable ones and sleep on a double matress? They would be fixed together with the bedsheet (fitted sheets with elastic band).

It reminds me a little bit of the fairy tale of the princess sleeping on a pea

If they are both rock-hard Indian mattresses, two would be as hard as one.

There is foam mattresses available. The traditional view is they are sweaty, but I think technology is improved a heap since that view was formed.

I'm afraid that I am that princess... one pea will ruin my night

I love Indian mattresses like you get in hotels, they're just right for me* -- never been one for really soft mattresses even if they're decent ones (and usually they're just saggy in my experience anywhere in the world).

I find a plain mat on a stone floor too much though.... yet millions of Indians lie on railway platforms and suchlike every night. I guess you get used to what you have to get used to.

* although sometimes I'd prefer them a bit cleaner.....

Not just railway stations.

Mrs N takes to a mat on the floor whenever she gets too hot. Many people I know only have the choice of floor.

I'm afraid I hate being cold at night, and will not sleep under a fan.

That's why I said two comfortable ones (at least the one on top should be soft)... and I guess TrinTrin is sleeping in a room with AC (I can't imagine from his lifestyle that this is not the case), so he shouldn't have a problem with sweating....

Oh yes... I can take an afternoon nap with the fan on, but to sleep in a draft irritates me no end, and also results in stiff neck pains.

We have AC, and I find it very difficult to sleep without it except from about November to about February --- but I like to keep the room around 28-28C. If Mrs N reduces the temperature to 25 or so then, yes, I feel cold.

That means you are already quite South Indian I was always amazed how people can feel the difference between 28/25 or 30/27...

One of my conversations:

My colleagues: "It's cold today...."
Me: "Oh, really? There is a difference? How can you feel that?"

Whatever the numbers, there is over ten degrees, maybe as much as fifteen between Chennai summer and Chennai winter. Imagine the difference, in a more temperate climate between a hot summer day at 30, and a spring day at 15. Or a spring day at 15 and a winter day at 0. each jump is several layers of clothing.

There are few Chennai days when I feel the need to wear other than a small towel inside the house, Many that I do need the AC on.

I expect that it will only take one or two more Decembers before I'm joining the locals in their woolly scarves!

its about the kind of conditions you are used to..

Delhi varies betweem 2/3 C to 44/5 C..so for us 20-25 C is pleasant...time for fun..
