Try the Nagaon and Murud beaches near Alibag which is just a one hour ferry ride away from the Gateway of India to Mandwa from where you will get a free bus to Alibag and then you can take another bus or shared rickshaw to Nagaon or Murud. These beaches are really nice and clean and compared to the dirty beaches of Mumbai city definitely better option for a couple of days out from the polluted city!!! There is the lovely Murud Janjira fort in the middle of the sea near Murud which is also a must see sight. There is a sailboat that takes you to the fort from the Murud jetty at the Rajapur village.
Cheers, Aadil.

Bordi
You can also try Bordi beach, its a long stretch of [hopefully] clean beach near Dahanu, about 2 hrs drive North from Mumbai [NH8 to Charoti fata and left turn all the way to Bordi via Dahanu] or you can take the train to Gholwad from Bombay Central, or the shuttle from Borivli / Virar. There are hotels and resorts there at all budgets.
If going by road, you cannot miss the unusual needle shaped Mahalaxmi mountain visible from Charoti fata onwards, there is a temple up there and a road going most of the way up. The Asavli dam is also near Bordi and worth a visit. If you take a right turn at NH8 from Charoti fata towards Jawhar, within about 4km you will come across the huge Kavdas lake on the left. It is very scenic and you will see the unusually humped Gambirghad mountain on the opposite side of the lake. Go further still and you will pass by the Dhamani dam, you may not be allowed in but go further still and cut through the light forest for a perfect quiet scenic picnic spot. But I digress, you wanted to know about beaches. |

MTDC Tarkarli is the best resort (rather the only resort) in Tarkarli, it's right on the beach. But if you want value for money then opt for Gajanan Guest house (2 mins. walk to the beach) which comes before MTDC. Rate there is Rs. 620 per room. I have stayed at both in Jan 08. Ronak.

Yes i have , last year infact... no complaints whatsoever in terms of the property and services but what was a big put off (think i have mentioned this some place else as well) was that if you happen to be there one the day the Deccan Odyssey stops there then be prepared to be ignored by the staff for a good 3-4 hours....the entire restaurant was reserved for them and the residents were made to sit in a corner ... in addition a lot of stuff for example alcohol which is not allowed for residents was allowed for them , they got the best china etc etc..

Middle Vaitarna public works commences today

I wish they would make rain water harvesting compulsory instead, which would then not require so many forests to be destroyed for mega dam projects. |

Bhimashankar

Post Karpudi Bhimashankar Maharashtra - 412407 Tel: 02133 - 263124 I got the above details from: http://www.holidayiq.com/resortinfo_...fr omDest=yes If you do go to Bhimashankar, please post your experiences as I would also like to go there again this monsoon season. There is also a PWD guesthouse bookable through mahapwd.com and a Forest Rest House booked through the forest dept. Bear in mind that during, just before and just after the month of Ashadh, there will be a huge influx of pilgrims as it is also a Jyotirlinga. In 2002 August we stayed at the Ghodegaon PWD resthouse as it was full in B'shankar. That was the rainiest period that year and a very dense fog enveloped the whole of Bhimashankar. The forests were dense and beautiful with fast flowing streams and waterfalls, wildflowers everywhere, unfortunately it was way too wet to explore. We also made the mistake of returning via the scenic Wada Rajgurunagar rd and our car broke down at a remote location en route, there was barely a soul in sight and eventually we had to be towed to Pune. Some village boys who came to our assistance, very kindly assured us that their sarpanch would let us stay overnight at their village, if necessary. Later, I wrote to thank them and they replied to say that it was their duty. I was really touched. Hope I havent bored you with these unsolicited details. Mention of Bhimashankar brought back memories. |
