Are there any small villages within the vicinity of Mumbai, that are worth seeing? Like, really rural places, please?

Well, it depends what you mean by "worth seeing".

Plenty of tribal villages [Adivasi padas] in rural Thane district which is next door to Mumbai city. Near Vajreshwari along the Parli Bhiwandi road is a pretty tribal village called Amrai. If you leave Mumbai by 7am, you could get there in about an hour and a half in your own vehicle. If you want to go further, go to any village near Jawhar, Dahanu, Wada etc.

I thought I should add some good treks close to Mumbai where I have been.
Lohgad, Visapur (both are forts) and Bhaja Caves (build in 2nd century B.C. by Buddhist Monks) all are very close to each other in Lonavala and are visual treat in monsoon. These are very close to the new Mumbai-Pune expressway. One Tree Hill Trek & others in Matheran are also nice, although slightly longer (the toy train route) & not very easy (trek from Morbe Dam side). Both can cause a bit of trouble for a beginner. There is also a road which goes to the top of Matheran. The toy train route is quite scenic.
