Somehow, I couldn't make that link to the photo journal itself so I had to write about the click within the link. (I corrected my/our name above to all lower case) Yes, we've been away thanks for noticing our absence. Sad to return to IM to all this chaos, but it's wonderful to have such tireless contributors giving us this amazing up-to-the-minute detail. Had we not changed our plans earlier this autumn, we would have been in Mumbai right now. distaff |

Unfortunately, many don't. The number of killed and physically injured excludes many victims.
Thank you to the IM community for the continued updates and thoughtful discussion. I wish all Mumbaikers the best in the coming days and weeks. |

The event was very graphic. The aftermath & stories equally so. The massacre was like a 21rst century Roman forum battle with good, evil, beasts and a filled to capacity audience watching on. I always ask myself how much is too much media coverage these days. Surely somewhere there is a tipping point where the average person like you, me & Indiamike starts to get more information than they really needed and the terrorists/evil-doers/beasts start to get the sensationalized, fear mongering coverage & publicity that they were 'aiming' for. Where that saturation point is, how to identify it, and how to convince money hungry, shareholder appeasing media outlets to moderate or pull the plug at the right time on it all is beyond my small brain to formulate ..... but somebody should be able to do so.

It is truly a sad day for India. Sincere apology to the guests who could not be protected in spite of all efforts. We share our grief with the people of Israel who were innocently butchered for no cause or reason. They were visitors to a country they loved. |

Stay Away
Am a resident Mumbaite. My piece of advice for the moment for anybody coming to Mumbai -- STAY AWAY. No area is safe as of now. The numbers of terrorists who infiltrated could be much more than the numbers found and dead. So surely there are many more terrorists on the loose. Whether on business, or leisure...just stay away.

guns and bombs...
but for the love of God it was not worse... the police did a good job, and many hotel workers saved many lives...if not for tireless workers the body count would be higher. this i know just from reading for the last several days... God bless the folks who helped.

Ratan Tata:
"The general manager [of the Taj hotel] lost his whole family in one of the fires in the building," Tata said. "I went up to him today and I told him how sorry I was, and he said, 'Sir, we are going to beat this. We are going to build this Taj back into what it was. We're standing with you. We will not let this event take us down.'" Tata added, "And that is the feeling that they have, and I have a feeling that that's pretty much echoed throughout the country." I so hope he is right.

Here's the thing....

In this modern world, we can never know what's going to happen, or where something is going to happen. Whether it be Mumbai, Madrid, London, New York, Hyderabad, or even Jaipur.
You are more at risk on a road in India, than by being attacked by terrorists. And I say this even after the recent attacks. I learned this the hard way this summer in India. Shit Happens.

Aishah the fact is despite many people feeling the need to be gung ho and show loyalty to India, the game has changed. For years I've said India is a very safe destination for foreign tourists, after this and other attacks this year I could not hand on heart say it is.
The stated aim to target foreign tourists is VERY worrying and should be thought about when planning a trip to India, especially Goa, which is an incredibly soft target, a single car bomb there could wipe out hundreds, well planned multiple blasts even thousands. Security in Goa is awful as it is at many big tourist sites in India, metal detectors switched off at train Stations, security/police asleep on the job, or too concerned about making their graft for the day, ancient weapons, sometimes not more than a Lathi Stick, undereducated, no pride in the job. These are areas people should be made aware of when planning a visit to India. And I'm certainly not scaremongering, rather informing those who have no clue as to the security situation in India and how bad it is. This attack would have been hard to stop anyway but generally India security is deplorable. Except if you have one of those ambassedors with a flashing red light. Then your ass is well covered. |
