affordable digs mumbai/shelleys is gone?
After reading glowing reviews of Hotel Shelleys from a few years ago, I've seen increasingly dreary and mysterious reports. I could not locate a webpage I'd' seen a few days ago, and now I've seen a message that the Hotel no longer exists. Then I tried to book in advance at the YWCA in Colaba, but that hostel (famed for cleanliness, ideal for me and my 4 year old travelling companion) no longer has a functioning website.
Any suggestions for a reasonably priced, clean place to stay ( I prefer old buildings, but also I'm eager to sleep well after a long flight, i.e. sans rats and bedbugs) ? I'm worried about waiting to book a Mumbai hotel because our flight arrives at 9 pm so it will be 11 pm by the time we hit the streets and I'm sure my little girl will by then be fast asleep. Thanks in advance, dear IndiaMikers. |

I would suggestsome of the hotels facing the beach (Hotel Sea Green (?); Sea Lord; etc. but they are around the US$50 for a small room for 1 person.
Better still, close-by is the YWCA - Colaba Rooms are reasonably priced and Fort is not too out of the way from most things. Address: 18, Madame Cama Road, Fort, Mumbai - 400 001 Tel: +91-22-2202 0122 Cheers Zoltan

Thank you for the proper link to the YWCA-Fort!
Dear Zoltan and others,
Thank you for putting me on to the proper YWCA website, which seems like the best deal for us gals (especially after hearing about heroin addicts over by Arthur Bunder rd--are these rumors unfounded?) What is the best method for making the advance reservation? Is it safe to put a certified bank draft in the mail if they don't seem to take credit cards? Will an email request suffice (which I doubt)? All best. |

Once they receive the money, I'm sure that you'd have no problems getting a confirmation on your reservation. As for the rumours of addicts in Arthur Bunder Rd. it's quite possible. Colaba is not the best area in India and it may attract the wrong crowd. Cheers Zoltan |

The YWCA also has dormitory rooms which are cheaper than the double room rates and only has two beds in one room. Colaba is pretty safe normally unless you get into some of the dark bylanes late at night. As long as you stay on the main roads you should be fine.
Cheers, Aadil.
