Address changes since 1947?

Hello Mumbai members.

I found a wonderful 3-page airmail letter today, it was written by a Mumbai man on the day of India's independence in 1947, and sent to a woman in England.

The letter tells of his joy at India's independence and his sadness about his country splitting in two, he goes on to tell of his hopes and dreams for the future of independent India.

It's a really nice read, and if I could get my scanner to work, I'd scan it for all to read.

Anyway, the point of this thread....

I would like to try to get this letter back to the family of the man who wrote it, I feel sure his grandkids would cherish the letter.

The address on the letter is.....(I also have his name)

Alhad, plot 12
Dadar, Bombay 28
Independent India

I've looked in the Eicher City map of Mumbai, but couldn't find this address, I'm wondering if the area has been re-developed since independence.

Can anyone suggest a way to find the family?

Steven, you might be in luck. I found this on the internet as a current address:

MRS. SARASWATI VAMAN AGASHE
11, ALHAD SOCIETY,PROF. V.S. AGASHEPATH DADAR MUMBAI - 400 028

Which would technically be the plot right next to #12.

The easiest would be an IMer living around Dadar in Mumbai, who can spare the time to check if the family still lives there.
Or if there is a forwarding address.

In crvlvr's post, PROF. V.S. AGASHEPATH is now probably Dr. V.S Agashe Marg (path and marg both mean road), Dadar West, Mumbai.

If you go to mapmyindia.com and search "Prof V S Agashe Marg, Dadar West, Mumbai, and MH in the State drop down", you can zoom into that area.
Seems to be a shortish road between Senapati Bapat Marg and Gokhale Road/

Wow, thanks Everyone, indiamike does it again.

Thanks to the info supplied, I've found V S Agashe Road on wikimapia and in the Eicher city map (page 24, H2).

The person who wrote and sent the letter is Raje S. Anant, though he signed the letter 'Suresh'.

I'll try to find an e-mail address for MRS. SARASWATI VAMAN or maybe a telephone number, or maybe I'll send a letter.

This could become interesting, a family could move around a lot in 60 years, there's every chance a member of the family is living in London......

Again, thanks all for the info.

The surname is Anant, I think. The initial S may be Suresh.

I had no luck looking up the online telephone directory for Saraswati Vaman or possibilities.

If you google 'Alhad Dadar', or "VS Agashe Road Dadar" a few establishments with email ids are thrown up,.

I think the family/descendants are unlikely to be around in that location now; Dadar would have been transformed from a middle class suburb to a central crowded residential/commercial hub in 60 years. Of course, many Maharashtrian families belong to Mumbai proper.

A guy who travelled to London in 47, has written in English when the post must be taking months to reach?... not a tourist I think, and educated...
