accommodation in mumbai

namaste

i will be arriving to mumbai 17th of jan early in morning.
so far i havent found any decent priced place to stay -- so, im asking you, who has been there before : is it hard to find some room from colaba area ?? this will be my 5th trip to india, so i have some experience about how things usually work (if theres any usual in india...), but never before i had such a hard time to book a room in advance.
any tips n pieces of information are highly respected....

thanx in advance n great travels...

J

bombay is difficult as most of the advertised hotels get early booking.

but surely you can find something. i would recommend you move up a bit northern from colaba. go to fort area or even further up. muslim areas can be pretty interesting option: they catter for less wealthy business people from middle east and you can find more options in a region of 1,000-1,500r. than in colaba where you would pay at least a double.

My usual answer is in Mumbai, try to have a room booked for at least the first couple of nights; if you don't like what you get, at least you have a bed and you can look on once you're there.

Mumbai isn't easy on accommodation and it's expensive -- relative to the rest of India, that is, not necessarily to where you live.

I'm sure it can be done on the fly, just may involve a lot of looking around, not really nice just on arrival, and you may well have to settle for something way below or above your standards for the first few nights.

Have you checked the site's Hotel Listings?

Tell us what you are used to pay ? I don't think anything under Rs.1200 in Bombay is termed 'nice'..

The Residency at the Fort is lovely, quite homely with big comfy beds and soft pillows - my favourite everytime I visit.

Definetly worth a try and much much better than most of the scungie and yukky hotels in Colaba area.

Here are some places to check out if you're in a bind, and dont' mind something that is not in a guide book -

They are at the bottom price range - so definitely not delux in any stretch of the imagination.

1) Hotel Regal Plaza
Aboobacker Mansion, R.No2 1st floor Above Cave Mondegar - SBS Rd. Colaba tel: 6539 2073
I paid 700Rs for a double (they wanted 800Rs, but I was single, and a friend had gotten a single for 450 or 475 a couple weeks earlier so talked them down to 700)
The hotel is basically 4 rooms down a hall with a tiny shared toilet/shower - which I think is supposed to have hot water, but I'm not sure.... it was cold when I used it.
The room itself is nothing great- but seemed clean and had a TV! The location is pretty good - I was only there for one night and didn't spend all that much time in the room - so it was fine. It is between the Regal Cinema and Macdonalds, on a 2nd floor.
I had also called a couple days earlier and made reservations. They kept them. (unlike another hotel I had in Jaipur!)

2) Apollo Guesthouse
43/45 Mathurateas Estate Building (across from the colaba police station) tel: 2204 5540 / 2288 3991
I got this place from a couple I met in Aurangabad - they said that it was pretty nice and the people there were friendly. I think they said that they paid 470Rs. I didn't get a chance to check it out - but these could be options to look into for a night or 2.

3) Red Shield (Salvation Army) - I've heard this is a good place to stay if on a budget- basic, but clean. I tried making reservations and they said that they were full. But some fellow travellers told me that they don't make reservations for dec/jan ... that it's just first come, first served. It may be a good place to check into once there.

Good luck! If you're travelling to Mumbai from elsewhere in India - I'd recommend asking other travellers or even the hotel in which you are staying if they can recommend a hotel.
