Singing in German is just plain wrong. Unless you're Marlene Dietrich and/or have smoked 40 Woodbine first, of course.
There used to be a fantastic act in the UK called Fascinating Aida, whose repertoire included a wicked spoof of Marlene called "Lieder". Quote:

If it's 99 (helium-filled) red balloons they are trying to hand you ..... methinks they want you to leave India - pronto!

From your translation dept.
It appears this thread has caused some linguistic concerns. True, the lingua franca at IndiaMike is English, just to keep it accessible to an international audience, and to save the mods from deciphering possible subliminal advertizing in Swahili. Which members are kindly requested to stick to (er, to the English, that is, and no offense to Swahili members).
However the title of this thread stems from a 1980s song by German Neue Welle (new wave) band Nena called (in German) "99 Luftballons," later re-released in English as "99 Red Balloons," which the original poster was presumably referring to. The links in post #2 seem to refer to the English edition; post #3 gives the opening verse in German. Member DHans then made a remark (#4) in German about this causing happy youthful memories, and in response to Mickey came back (#7) with a quote by a German author to the effect that "It's safe to sit down with people who sing; bad people have no songs at all." So, er, everything's still cool, all harmless fun, and as the book says: Don't panic! (Ooff, wipe-sweat-from-brow smiley )From your friendly translation dept., & so forth & so on (And can we now discuss Mumbai balloons please? )Last edited by machadinha : Jan 17th, 2008 at 01:19. |

Great ![]() I wish it were true! Posting in English is a strict rule of the site --- but if a senior member and a moderator can't break a rule in the name of fun from time to time then life is sad....

My German was restricted to 'commando' comics when I was young, even though my father taught me ballroom dancing when I was three years old, in German.. he was there for a year.
But Marlene Dietrich changed all that ![]() Hemmingway said something like 'she could break your heart with her voice', I think <sigh> |
