Ten months deposit is normal here in Chennai. One can negotiate. I got it down to five, but I know the landlady and made the deal in London.

Hi grlloutthere and MoritzK,
I studied at Bharti Vidyapeeth and Symbiosis in Pune for 5 years (2000-2005) so I think I can be of great help to you. Though we guyz put up in all kinds of rooms and apartments, it's the gals who get a good deal. First of all, let me cool u down by informing that PUNE is full of students and young professionals. A common scene in all the common places on any evening would be like witnessing some youth fest, with the ppl in the age range of 18-28. They are mainly from Asia and Africa. It's a safe place to stay, trust me (rest is upto fate) Now for accomodation: Your workplace is in Shivaji Nagar, hence I advice you to search for an accomodation at Model Colony (Deep Bangla Chowk) or Bhosale Nagar. All the girls that I knew in those five years used to stay in either of the above two places. It is 15 minutes away from Shivaji Nagar by bike. Ideally, u will find a PG with one entire room at your disposal or you might have to share it with another girl. If not then, u will definitely find a decent apartment with some foriegn students. Rent will be anywhere between Rs.2500 - Rs.4000. Do not shell out more than that. About the security deposit, if you pay up 6 months rent at once, then you will not be asked for it. It would be great if you can afford a moped (gearless scooter) to move around. Koregaon Park, though a great place to stay, is around 30 min away (traffic not taken into consideration). Take a look at Google Earth and switch on the Google Earth Community and Community Showcase layers. All your doubts will get cleared. Fell free to ask me anything Chow 4 Now

...You can't.
At least I don't think that Google Mapping has reached Indian streets yet. The best I can do with Chennai is finding a big landmark and following the streets from there. Which is only possible if you know a place pretty well. Give it time, they'll get there! |

Hello there,
Though I live in NY now I was born and raised in Pune (left Pune in 99 hence bit rusty about it hope it has not changed much). I love every bit of that city. Shivajinagar is a big area and was happening as KP but less cosmopolitan and yes lots of restriction if you happen to live in apartment complexes (no booze no parties etc). I have to say by far Pune was the safest city for everyone and was very accommodative. I will def recommend to live on Deccan, very convenient and well connected for public transport. Hope you will enjoy your stay in Pune.

Nick-H and Capt_Mahajan, thanks for the input, I think haggling is the key, I'll try to get it to 5 or under
, will report back how it went. Gaurav, Taurian, thanks for all the tips. I was planning on living in a student area, where it will be easy to meet people. Right now I am looking at several jobs located west of Pune city, at Raisoni Industrial Park or Hinjewadi Phase 1. With a scooter, would the commute from an apartment somewhere close to Pune University housing be convenient? (i.e. about 30 minutes?) By the way, from everything I am reading, especially from you guys, it really sounds like Pune is a great place to be, especially for young people. If I wasn't already hyped before, I am now!!

Cheers everyone! Really helpful stuff, can't wait to get there! I've been in a little country town, no cafes, no bars, no clubs, not even a movie theatre, and hardly a young person to be seen. Not so bad but Pune's gonna be a good shock.

hi all,
anyway, here're couple of things, I'm sure girloutthere is now girlouthere, this is just for informational purposes, there is far better map than google earth & it's free it's known as wikimapia. The site is www.wikimapia.org Now the good point about this site is tht while it uses the same thing as google earth, there is lot of community orientation without the hassles which go in learning the keyhole language (Google Earth) have done quite a bit of mapping on wikimapia of some of the streets. |

Well, it could be you could start of with making some tags & letting others know, then things are sure to follow. My home is here in this frame just haven't tagged it although have tagged it with the Veer Savarkar Bhavan as well as the swimming pool near to me. I'm actually very near to the Joshi Wada pav (Indian veg. burger)

Hey! I was talking out of the wrong orifice again
!Now I took a proper look and it is excellent! You can't get in as close as with google earth, but using the two together is great. And I have added a couple of new tags! It deserves a post in one of the Map threads, or even a thread of its own. |
