Moving to Pune for a year. a few questions.
From Mid August I'm going to be doing volunteer work with akanksha, which is based in Shivaji Nagar. I was looking at the pune map on line and couldn't find this district. I'm thinking I'll try and get accomodation around the koregan park area, is this very far?
Also does anyone know if I'll be able to find a fairly basic room, in a family's house for 6,000 rp per month or less around koregan or should I look somewhere else? If somewhere else ideas on where and how to find it would also be welcome. Final question: is Pune easy to get around by bicycle? All help and advice would be very welcome. Ta! |

Hi, I live in Delhi but used to live in Pune quite a few years ago.
Depends where in Shivaji Nagar the NGO is as it is a large area. If you can't find it on a map, then look for "Deccan." I used to live in Deccan, and where I lived there was part of S'Nagar. Koregaon Park is pretty far, and traffic is atrocious in Pune, but depends if your hours will be flexible or not, e.g. if you can travel early in the a.m. you may be ok. Can't answer your question on rent, but I would say no on the bicycling, and no way if you were thinking KP to SN. I think there must be threads on cycling in India's cities, just see those for more info. Good luck! Quote:

Pune is great but why live in the high cost and very distant area of KP. Just off the Deccan is a lot of housing. Paying guest accomodation would solve some of the problems of fitting in. The Deccan is great if frantic. The Shreyas is great for veg and try the Holhapuri Chicken elsewhere if yyou dare. SN is a good walk away but can be done. Pune busses are actually decent for India if crowded. Best town for a young person. Not far from the Deccan is the film institute. With a little charisma one can wangle an invitation to the screenings from that funky crowd. Hang out with the college crowd at Rupalis in the Deccan and for a blow out meal, the Blue Diamond way over on camp side. The downside of Pune is its smoky in the evenings..

Pune sounds brilliant from that description. The KP idea was only going off the guidebook, pretty useless re Pune, and not knowing where S Nagar is. I'm just taking a great leap into the unknown really. Any hints on how to find guest accomodation just off the Deccan. Is it possible using internet? |

Internet no. India doesn't work quite that way. Go to the registrars of local colleges and ask them (GIPE, Ferguson, etc.). Choose carefully as its an intense experience (and satisfying one). Pune is a college town onto which has been grafted a lot of ugly industry..

And as far as accomodation in pune is concerned...it is suggested tht you stay around Shivaji nagar(heart of pune city). You will be connected to all good places from here and also you will be able to get decent PG-accomodation for Rs.2500-3000/-. As far as finding them out are concerned, local newspapers are good source and also few reputed professional Rental consultants.May be later i will pm you with email-ids or cell numbers of few such persons.

Edwardesco: I'll start practicing my presentable look.
Smart guy: thanks, the link re cycling is especially welcome!!! I guess I'll just have to take a couple of days once I arrive and sort things out then. Good to know there will be places in my budget range though. A year+ without income is kinda daunting. Both your comments are really helpful and give me much more of a sense of Pune than I had before. |

deposit
I am also moving to Pune beginning of August and have been looking for apartments on the internet (just to get an idea about prices/location). Rent seems to be very affordable at 4,000-5,000 Rs. for a 1 bedroom apt, but all ads I have seen require up to 10 months deposit! That comes down to 50,000 Rs.,
quite hefty. Is this common and is there a way to get around it?

a pg accomodation wont have high deposits. for rentals, you may be able to negotiate a bit, but some deposit is normal.

Naturally, but I have never paid more than 3-4 months in apartments in Spain, Germany, Thailand. I am just wondering if 50,000 Rs. deposit for a 5,000 Rs./month rental is the norm, or if there's another explanation for that number
