What Do You Have to Do to Find a Good Nanny Around Here?

I don't have the advantage of living near a big city like Delhi or Bangalore. I am living here in Ferozepur and can't seem to find or keep a nanny for very long. If we can get them to come, they seem enthusiastic at first, but then either they work one day and then never show up again or they work, but they constantly show up late, steal things and/or just don't want to do the job right.

Now, I don't want to get into a discussion on work ethics here, but mainly want advice on where to look to find a good nanny.

I have heard bad things about agencies, so we haven't even tried them. We've so far been getting nannies based on word of mouth and recommendations of locals who supposedly know "hard working" potential candidates for the job.

Is there some magic trick to finding a decent nanny? A certain best way? I'd love to hear from all who either have a nanny they like or know someone who does.

Nanny Gate

Finding a nanny or help is hard wherever you live. The only secret, which might be hard to swallow, is you have to go through a long line before one finally clicks. This is India and there is no rhyme or reason why one clicks and another doesn't. I know this is not what one wants to hear but this is being realistic. Perhaps others can comment on my grim observation...

1. Having a live-in nanny is the best option, particularly if you know her already.
2. Getting young or someone with small kids is likely to cause issues, as they are mom at their home and need to take care of many things!
3. Now-a-days trained nurses are available through good agencies. They come at a cost, but they are more professional.

Quick way: Talk to some hospital (lot of nurses, particularly from Kerala are in Delhi region), for sub contracting a nurse at some monthly rate. That is, in my view a very good option. Even if they come and stay from Delhi/Noida, you can trust them. They are young, caring and want to learn and earn .

Glad to know now that I'm not the only one! I thought maybe it was the area or something...

Do you have family here? mother-in-law? sisters-in-law?

Ask them for references.

Asking the driver/gardener/watchman/milkman/newspaperboy/neighbour's driver also works but as an outsider to the place it may not work for you.

Good help is always a result of a lot of trial and error.

On the plus side, at least not being from India you're presumably not used to relying on having someone else to do all this stuff for you, so you won't be totally lost in the meantime.
