Thinking of moving to India

Hi,

I'm thinking to move in India for 1 year or so. I'm 25 years old female who needs a change and India seems to be the place...I've always been attracted to the ideea.

I have a 3 years and a half work experience in IT - Quality Assurance and Usability bases (sorry fo those that don't understand what this means)and I'm thinking in finding a job and enjoying another way of life.

Need some advice in areas to live in and some sites where I can find jobs in IT would be great - I'm searching for weeks now and cannot find anything suitable.

You have been attracted to the idea of India, but have you ever experienced the lifestyle and housing that someone on your (Indian) salary level would pay for? There is no way I would recommend relocating to India for a year until you have a good idea what you would be letting yourself in for.

In any case, it might not be that easy. To get an employment visa, your employers have to be able to say that they cannot fill the post locally.

Given the high level of IT expertise in India, and given the current downturn in the economy, you would have to have some serious specialty under your belt to be able to get an employment visa for an IT post.

Don't consider living there until you visit first. Figure out what part of India you would like to live in--it's a big country with big differences in everything from place to place.

Forget about getting work, as Haylo points out, almost impossible. They are not short of people for IT jobs. They don't need you! Nothing personal

Haylo and camelgirl are both right. Please don't consider moving here without visiting first. I moved here because I married an Indian man but I had never visited here (and honestly I am crazy about my husband so it wouldn't have mattered). It is so totally different from anywhere I have ever been before. I had visited much of Europe and Russia. So I had some travel experience but you really can't prepare yourself for India. It is an assault of the senses, total chaos.
Wherever you go there will be people pooping on the street and living in what you will consider to be total poverty. There will be cows on the street and all that but thats just half of it. It will be incredibly hot some or most of the year. You may not have any AC. Your clothes won't dry properly and your passport will become so damp it may start to grow fungus on it while sitting in your passport holder ! You will be using your computer and the internet won't work for several days or may come and go quite often. You may have power cuts everyday or only evertime there is a cloud in the sky. Water may not be available at all hours of the day and you may have to keep water in buckets for use later in the day. You may have to boil all your water. You may have to take cold showers often because there is no power so the water heater may not work. You will be stared at by EVERYONE and people will try to cheat you because you look or sound foreign. You may have to learn how to use an Indian toilet without western toilet paper. Even if you get a descent salary I doubt that your lifestyle here in India will far exceed what you could have in the west. Most of the biggest cities like Delhi, Banglore, and Mumbai are relitively expensive. Having a servant sounds good until you realize that you have to set aside much of your own time to keep an eye open that they are not stealing you blind or just totally skipping over all the work.
This is just a drop in the bucket to consider. India is an amazing place but it can be hard to live in, especially if you come here without having ever seen what it is like. I had a friend who came here before I ever did who planned to stay 2 weeks and ended up being here 24 hours. They just couldn't stand it and wanted out of the first possible flight. It isn't for everyone. Personally I think anyone can handle one year anywhere but you might be really miserable. Don't take the risk, sink or swim sucks! Come for a dip with a life preserve !

IT job in india. sadly we have a country full of computer exploits. Secondly i don't see how you might get a employment visa.

I wouldnt recommend you not to visit india, but i would ask you about your plans. Are you smothered by the hum drum explosively paced life ? or is it that you dont find comfortable with your own culture ? Do you want to have metal peace ? Im sorry getting a job in IT and living a metro in india would not do you any good, to experince the so called tranquil solace you might have to live in subrural India. which sometimes can be very gruesome for the cultural shock it offers.

I have a friend who lives in Bulgaria, she loves Indian culture so she will come to India and study about the culture, may be you can try something like that if you just want to experience life here. You are with your child, may be this idea isnt the best.

Let us know more, we might be able to help, about your education and about your expertise.

Well Thats too discouraging :-) I do agree with all of you on almost everything, but there are good things too which probably even I would have put back if I was the first one to comment.
Yes its chaotic, there are touts or people who would be waiting to cheat you just coz you look different. The competition is huge looking at the kind of skillset you posses, and the list will go on just like the list which says
Its beautiful, there are wonderful people who would go all the way to help you, its crowded but people will still move to accomodate you.
In mumbai its said that if you are running behind a crowded local train people will stretch their hands like petals of a flower and pull you in the train. The food is yummy.
Well its for us to see if the glass is half full or half empty, usually I am one of who would say "Its chaotic out here dont you have any other option?" But come on guys I think its all on how you look at it.
I agree to the fact that take a dip before you plan to swim or sink like April. But if you have such strong feelings and have already made up your mind, let me know if I can help. I work in a somewhat simmilar profile.

All the best in whatever you plan, hope it works out best

Very True, we are just trying to be realistic here mate and obviously as i mentioned there are many facets to India. She has to choose from them and she has to decide whats best for her.

Hi Loredana

You could put up your resume on websites like naukri.com, monsterindia.com and see what kind of response you get and then decide what to do.
You could also create a profile which says that you are in India to get to know if your skillset is in demand.

Regards
Reemus

I love this advice! And its so true, and because of all that, I still think India is the greatest place to really LIVE! Its like an adventure everyday, if you have the means. If your coming here broke or have to work really hard for little money, I think it would be miserable. But you should come visit anyway, its a great place to experience a different world, culture, and all!

Must shoot them, then.

All of them? I stare only at the pretty ones, and cheat the rich.

Tragic. Must complain to the Human Rights Commission. Give me toilet paper or give me death.

Wrong. Like some others.

I think you forgot to mention that all Indian men will be waiting to jump on you at the first opportunity, if you are a female. Or maybe you did.

At last. Something I can agree with in the post.

Just an idea if you are interested in organic farming/building...etc, and learning/helping out on farms check out the http://www.wwoof.org/ website. I've meet people from all over the world who have spent many years traveling and staying at these places. You have to sign up and then contact the places you like and usually you work (most times hard) in exchange for food & room. Good luck...

I think that the point of AprilFlower's post is that India is not, and can be very far from, the dream that people have of it.

I can disagree with some of the things that she says --- but then, she is speaking from her experience, I am speaking from mine. For a start, mine is a different locality.

I wanted to live in India after nearly a decade of short, but regular, visits. As in many intimate relationships, the romantic dream is one thing, the reality (for better or worse --- or, more likely, a bit of both!) is another.
