Retiring to Mussoorie?

Is Mussoorie a good place to retire? I live in USA and eventually plan to move to India to retire. I am really interested in mountain resorts which have cool climate. Any suggestions? What is the Real Estate market like? Is it easy to find houses to buy or rent? Is it safe?....

Thanks
Namita

retirement in India

My only advice would be to GO there and have a
Look for yourself.

There are Hill Stations Both in the North & South.Personally I prefer the South.Coorg & Munnar
are just two that I would Consider at this point of time, another place in the south I would look at is Conoor which is near a Big hill station called
Ooty in Tamil Nadu state.

There are many Restrictions as you will find out
for Purchasing Property in India. I myself would be more inclined to just lease a place on long Term basis.

All the Best

I agree with Vandy - on this forum there are a couple of local names that people have mentioned. Contact them and go and visit.

I also agree with Vandy's choice of Coonoor.

Cheers

Are you an Indian citizen (NRI) or a PIO or OCI? If not -- i.e., if you are just an ordinary "garden variety" U.S. citizen who would like to move to India to retire -- you probably won't be able to obtain the kind of visa/immigration status that would allow you to move there and stay permanently or even long term, and you won't be able to purchase real property there.

Indian Citizen

Unfortunately I am not an Indian Citizen but as my roots are from India (my grandparents moved to Tanzania in 1890s), I am trying to get the PIO status

Mussoorie is a good place to visit. Retirement? Hmmm, I don't know - just got back yesterday, sub-zero temps causing water-pipes to crack all over town, the quietest/best area (Cantonment) went without water for a week (some houses), others had to HEAT their water-pipes to melt the frozen water, repaired pipes cracked again the next day, and the next, and the next.....I think I'll continue to prefer Delhi.
Plus land/housing is pretty much unavailable, rarely is something sold nowadays espesh in the Cantt.

frozen pipes

In that case, I should focus on Ooty or Coonoor - I want to be away from city prefer cooler climate.
Thanks for the info.

From the point of view of a place to live permanently I think Mussoorie might fit the bill - I like it very much. There is also quite an American community here partly because of Woodstock school - I would certainly not dismiss it as a possibility for you. It would be impossible to buy into I think as Dilliwalla has indicated but certainly renting would be feasible. You should look around Landour Cantt area. The beauty of Mussoorie is that you are not far from Delhi should you wish to have a cultural lift to your life - many interesting, well educated people however living in Mussoorie and surrounds.
I have been to Coonoor - it is nice but not as interesting as Mussoorie area. Yes, it is cold in winter but you can cater for this or go for a holiday somewhere warmer!

You can find some cottages that are cheaper in rent - if you go to Landour area, or just away from Library Bazaar end. It is possible to find low budget accommodation. In Mussoorie main market areas, it is expensive. There are estate agents in The Mall - you can make enquiries there. Also check out Landour Language School threads for some ideas for accommodation up in Landour.
