Renewing employment visa in India ?

Has anyone else gotten their initial employment visa in their home country then tried to renew the visa while in India ?

I got my initial EV in UK (Edinburgh - last Dec.) and was told that I could either renew here (in Ahmedabad at the FRO/FRRO), or I could go back to the UK and renew it there.

Since I figured it would be cheaper here I am in the process of trying to get the EV renewed here but things seem to be dragging a bit (with expiry date of 31 Dec).

What is the risk of being stuck with no visa (and the likely implications) if the visa expires and the new one is still 'not appearing' ? Will it be ok since the visa application is 'in process' should I need to be able to leave after this expiry date ?

I know there have been other threads about 'overstays' and suchlike but it seems that those situations were different to this i.e. people looking to purposely (or 'accidentally') overstaying without applying for any extension.

You should apply for the extension in good time, but I think that once the application is in, you are covered to remain in India. I seem to remember something about them giving a three month extension while they consider the renewal?

Cheers Nick. I started the process 2 - 3 weeks ago (as advised by the FRO/FRRO), but it seems the usual 'Indian bureaucracy' (sp?) is putting a spanner in the works.

Still - I have another appointment/meeting tomorrow (my 4th!) so hopefully things will move along a little further and I will get that much closer to getting the visa renewed!
