Moving to Udaipur with kids

My husband has a job offer in a hotel in Udaipur. We have two small children and are trying to find out about how is life there.

Udaipur is a really beautiful little town. I realise people have very differing views about it (which you are sure to hear), but personally it was one of my favourite places in Rajasthan.

It is a lot quieter than some of the other tourist towns, and would be a lot easier transition for bringing two kids to live in the country than a bigger city like Jaipur or Jodhpur.

The people there are generally very friendly, outside the tourist circuit, but I guess the fact remains that it IS a tourist town - so there will always be someone seeing you as a tourist and looking to take advantage of that.

How long would you be there for? It is definately somewhere I could imagine taking kids to live for a while.

OK, we were there over X-mas (with the kids)....

Udaipur is NOT a little town. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and where the palaces are indeed beautifull, this cannot be said from the rest of town that is pretty congested.

Having said that; try to send emails to some of the 5 star hotels and see whether they employ westeners who nmight shed a light on the situation.

Oh thank you both for your views!
We should spend there a couple of years and will be living within the hotel. The kids would go to a english speaking primary school. Coming from a busy city where you find everything I'm sure it will be difficult at times but we are very much looking forward to detox from the stress.

I would like to know if there are every day shops that sell things like nappies, magazines, toiletries, post office... And how about hospitals..?

I am not sure India is any real relief from stress, just a different style. However, with some adjustment I think you will find it a positive experience

I really liked Udaipur the first time I went to India. The next time I went back to India it was were I went to relax for a few days, get over my jetlag, and slowly adjust to India. I didn't travel all over the city, mind you, but I find that it was a comfortable sized city to navigate. If I had to live in India, I would be content in Udaipur.

Udaipur is a great place. I have been living in this city for more than 6 years now.

Post your letters at the General Post Office, Chetak Circle, that is the fastest.
As a good hospital I can recommend you the Udaipur Hospital. The newly built American Hospital is also said to be good, however I cannot say anything about it.

For shopping you can make your daily purchasings in the Co-Op Supermarkets, they are all over the town.

If you want to know anything else...

In which hotel is your husband working ?

Have you shifted already ?

best regards,
anjuli
