Hitesh of Doon makes a good point regarding dehradun connectivity to Delhi.
This holds true for people intending to take the international flights out of Delhi. There are only two flight out of Jolly Grant airport and the last flight leaves Dehradun at 1650 hrs and
arrives into Delhi an hour later. Unfortunately these flights are the smaller flights where passengers are not even allowed to take small strollers inside the aircraft. Everything has to be checked in! Then comes the long agonizing wait at the airport since most intl flighs leave only around 1-3 am timeframe.
Yes, there are number of trains from Dehradun to Delhi and timing wise only the Shatabdi may work bu again the big bags may have to be booked in the luggage van!
So yes, connecting to intl flights may be a temporary issue till such time more flights are introduced from Dehradun in the near future.

Seeking input about good residential areas of DD

Can someone already living in Dehradun please list all the main residential areas of the city, starting with the most upscale, and going down from there? I am starting my search for a good place to live, and could use that input.

One Bigha = 8100 Sq. feet = Approx. 900 Mtrs.

Hi folks,

Checking this thread after a loooooooong time. We moved into Dehradun and have been living here for the past 8 months. Now have a very good perspective. Still miss out on a lot of action w.r.t. U.S. life in the past, but certain things are nice. Decent greenery, near to a lot of visit-worthy places. Renting a nice big home for 15K, other costs are much higher than expected. Averaging Rs. 55K per month expenses with a FT driver (paying him 5k/month) with just one child in a play school. Is it the recent high inflation for veges/fruits? We eat out just once or twice a month, that too in not high end hotels like Madhuban but like Sagar Ratna.

Plans for early retirement on hold due to high living costs in Dehradun I can't generate 55-70K/month sitting idle

Fellow doonites - how do you manage the high living costs here? Is this a temporary phenomenon? Veges and fruits are costing upwards of Rs. 40-80 per kilo routinely.

Wow ... that is dirt cheap ... a driver would cost you 7K-10K in any metro.

With veggies at 40-80 / kilo, how can you end up spending 55K?

Maybe my accounting is not accurate and it includes charities discretionary items (about 10k/month) and personal/family travel. The so-called FT driver has very litle work (2 days off per week) and since I travel a lot, my travel days are also holidays for him. Otherwise, he wanted 6-7K.

Wow! what do you need a driver for in D.dun, it is not a big city and has a decent transport system. Spending 55k / month in D.dun is steep. Where do yo ubuy your veggies from? I found the veggies to be a lot cheaper in D.dun than they are up here in Utk. Infact I go to the vegetable market and get a load of veeggies up here everytime I am in Ddun. Generally lasts me a couple of weeks!

First, I work here at the outskirts, need to commute more than 15 km each way. Having returned from U.S. did not want to risk driving on rash Indian highways, so the driver will stay as long as I work at this place. I agree that for city driving and occasional long distance, you don't need a driver here.

I buy veggies from the market at the intersection of EC Road and Haridwar Road, where there is good variety. Please tell me if there are better places to buy from. Subzi mandi in ISBT is dirty to both shop at and the min. qty they want to sell is high.

As I said earlier, subtract avg. of Rs. 10k/month from my estimate as that is for charities. Still, I am surprised at spending Rs. 45K to live decently in Dehradun.

Wow! I thought I was alone, but not.

1. Could anyone suggest good English medium elementary school and residential area for middle class family. I’m visiting Dehradun in January to find out elementary school and residence (rent) in nearby area (1 – 2 km). Any help is highly appreciated.

2. Recent visitors, kindly suggest place to stay for a month to survey Dehradun.

Cool Sparrow – Your comments are very encouraging.

Hi Cool Sparrow and others
we moved to Dehradun last month from the US and are still settling in. Would love to network more with folks in the area.
We are renting a place near Vasant Vihar for now and are looking around to eventually buy a place some where.
A lot of the places are really bad, builders have created these private colonies which are really cramped, no open areas for kids to play, very claustrophobic feeling

ANyway- again would love to connect with folks around here. We are a couple in our late thirties and have a toddler.
