Hi
I just came across this site and this thread. I hope the original poster sees this. I am also looking to move to Dehradun in April 2009. We are now actively searching for a place to move in. We would ultimately want to buy a place, but would perhaps need to rent initially. I would love to get in touch with the original poster on this. So - cool_sparrow, if you see this message, please respond. Thanks and good luck Smorgh |

Hi Smorgh,
Just accidentally saw this old thread to see if there are any updates. Glad to see a future D'Dun resident. Are you an expat and are you returning with family to retire or work there? |

Hi Cool Sparrow,
Just now I joined this forum. As I'm a resident of Dehradun thought of replying to your query. You can find good South Indian food in restaurants like Sagar ratna in Dehradun. South Indian food like dosas are highly popular here and they can be found even in small stalls in the city. Several south indian restaurants are also there in Dehradun. Best way to locate a home in Dehradun is to hire an agent and give him your specifications. He will do the job for you. There's even a South Indian store by name Malabar store where you can buy Tamil movie cd's and pickles. To befriend Tamilians dig them out from Orkut. That should work! Happy Moving! Welcome to Dehradun Shangrila |

Hi all I am coming back to this forum after a while. Our plans to move to Dehradun are still on. It is good to "see" all you folks- already living there or thinking of living there. We are moving sometime in June. We are moving with our family ( miya- biwi- bachcha and dog) and plan to start some enterprise of our own there. Will have more questions as we near our move date. smorgh |

Hi Everyone,
I just joined this forum and was pleased with the information it provided for folks moving to Dehradun. I am a software engineer (presently working overseas and planning to come back to India for good). I am basically a South Indian and planning to buy a house in Dehradun. Iam also thnking of moving to Dehradoon. Based on the postings on this forum I think Dehradun is the place to go. Thanks again guys for your valuable inputs. |

Dehradun is a nice place. I an easily walk anywhere I want to and from town without any problems and even cycle. The downtown is small but has everything. A very good grocery store with imported products for us foreigners, all styles of Indian restaurants, and for foreigners again, Pizza Hit, Dominos Pizza and Mcdonalds. Lots of Chinese restaurants although I find them a little too spicy. a FT driver is about 3500 to 5000 per month but the high end is definitely better drivers. There are several liquor outlets and butcher shops with fresh and frozen meats. Best are those on Rajpur Road. I have been here for over a year now and enjoy it here. Its proximity to Haridwar, Rishikesh and Mussoori are great as they are only a short drive away.

Dehradun is bustling and will soon be bursting at the seems (as if it is not already) as all State Capitals should be, but it still retains its more or less relaxed attitude that is lacking in most other state capitals. You have almost everything here that one could think of for a decent living for most urbanites.

Yes DD has definitely exploded in last decade, therefore if you drive, then a little further out of DD in the valley, towards Raipur side maybe, is very attractive country. Property prices in DD are very high, 'specially Rajpur Rd. side and up the hill - If one's going to build a house, then definitely look further afield for a bigger landscapeable plot; DD is a city, albeit one of the best and has all those city things which is great if you need that stuff, but it is not particularly peaceful any more.

Dear desi_nomad, welcome to IM.
Dehradun Real Estate is pretty expensive...and the interesting fact is that recession has not dented the prices it has only stopped the rapid upmove..... Average rates for land till last year were Rs. 12000 per Sq. yard near Forest Research Institute.

Hello all
We are still looking for a place. We move there late September -early October, so we have some time. We also plan to rent for a bit and then buy , after we know what we like/don't like about the city first-hand. We are shipping our belongings in end July and would need to give an address to the shippers. So we need to first fix a place where we can rent 1 or 2 rooms to keep our stuff. We are looking around for warehouses, godowns, but havent yet found any. Anybody here know of reliable agents/property dealers whom we could talk to? Thanks smorgh |

Reliable property dealer/agent- now that's a misnomer! what are you looking to rent? There are two options- one is a flat in a gated community and second is a kothi. Let me know what you are looking for and I can give you some numbers.
