Hi sarah,

These days chandigarh is turning into more of a housing society culture.
You will not find proper housing societies in chandigarh howerver if u go to sectors like 43-44-45 46-47-48-49 you will find lot of housing societies.
Like 49 has pushp vihar i guess which houses punjab universtiy teachers/other faculty. Note that these r not given on rent to university people but sold to them. Also security is good out there its got huge parks for evenning jog nearby.
You need to have a 2/4 wheeler there [ personal advice ] as these sectors are on the outskirts. There are a lot of things that one can talk about but i guess use ur judgement & dont trust anyone no matter how nice he/she/it appears.

There's a Whole Food store in Sect 22, the block closer to the Bus stand. In Sect 9 there is a new bakery, both these shops have very good bread. I am noticing more stores opening that have interesting imported foods but one has to spend time searching them out and then trying to remember where they are. Sect 9 has a good one, as does 18, 22, 17, Mohali Phase 3B2 I think. As for fruit and veg there are plenty but pretty toxic by all accounts if grown on the plains. Anything from Himachal will be almost organic which is a plus.

At present the whole of Punjab and Haryana is pretty chocked with pollution, not nice at all and will get worse over the colder months.

Rents are all over the show but I keep hearing about good places at about Rs 4,000 per month, however what is good to some may be in need of a good scrub to others.

Heat a little oil in a pan

Yum! sounds good... and I think the toasting part definately counts as cooking!

Talking of cheese..any idea where/if you can get "proper" cheese like English cheddar or something similar in Chandigarh. And what about mozerella??

hee hee...try to eat out where students are eating. Loog for sector 15 and sector 11 market. I am sure you will love this.

I personaly do not like eating in RESTAURANTS....but even when I am in mood of chill-out....student eating joints are best !!
