Question living expenses for a single retired male in rural India

Male, Canadian Citizen, Indian roots, taking early retirement and returning to India after 34 years, I plan to live in rural Punjab, Haryana or Rajasthan. Can anyonr help me to figure out what might be the minimum living expense per month if I just rent. I also invite any suggestion i.e. renting a one bedroom with kitchen or as a paying guest.I am told for an early retirement, my monthly pension may be around $500 per month(about Rs15000-20,000)Thank you!

Rs.15-20,000/- should be sufficient in rural areas. But you may have a problem renting an apartment as rural areas have no concept of single bedroom kitchen.

15000-20000 is luxury in a rural area. A large part of my family are in rural punjab, and their monthly expenditure(apart from wastage on liquor etc., and lavish weddings and jeeps) is barely 5000/month for a household of 4!
However renting may be a problem, so you may need to rent in a small city like Ropar/Bathinda etc., outskirts

Thank you for your responses but.......

I guess I was aiming more to find out the grocery prices. Also, should I go for a little while to see how it goes or just GO!.My pension is only around $400 Per Month. I have my brothers and sisters living there but do not want to depend on them, instead, if I could, I would help them. I am going there after 32 years. Any advice from recent expats or NRI who has moved back would be greatly apreciated

Just to clarify at the current rate your pension stands at almost 25,000 INR , even a few weeks back when the rate was stable it would have been around 20-22k.
