Male, Canadian Citizen, Indian roots, taking early retirement and returning to India after 34 years, I plan to live in rural Punjab, Haryana or Rajasthan. Can anyonr help me to figure out what might be the minimum living expense per month if I just rent. I also invite any suggestion i.e. renting a one bedroom with kitchen or as a paying guest.I am told for an early retirement, my monthly pension may be around $500 per month(about Rs15000-20,000)Thank you!

15000-20000 is luxury in a rural area. A large part of my family are in rural punjab, and their monthly expenditure(apart from wastage on liquor etc., and lavish weddings and jeeps) is barely 5000/month for a household of 4!
However renting may be a problem, so you may need to rent in a small city like Ropar/Bathinda etc., outskirts

Thank you for your responses but.......
I guess I was aiming more to find out the grocery prices. Also, should I go for a little while to see how it goes or just GO!.My pension is only around $400 Per Month. I have my brothers and sisters living there but do not want to depend on them, instead, if I could, I would help them. I am going there after 32 years. Any advice from recent expats or NRI who has moved back would be greatly apreciated ![]() |

Just to clarify at the current rate your pension stands at almost 25,000 INR , even a few weeks back when the rate was stable it would have been around 20-22k.
