MOD NOTE: This thread is a split from the UK Visa thread.

I don't think it makes any difference to the Indian authorities where you get paid (And, unless India and Canada have a double-taxation agreement, it probably doesn't make a difference to the tax authorities where you receive the money either. Mind you, you'd barely pay tax, if any, on that salary) --- you want to work there, you need an employment visa!
The Indian tax authorities are dead certain what they want you to pay them.

If you live there for more than six months a year then your world-wide income is both declarable and taxable in India.

They don't care if you're working or not...

Same as the UK...

Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.

So are you saying that if you spend more than six months a year here, say on two separate 6 month Tourist visas, then any UK income, for example, rent from your home or interest on savings(sic) is taxable in India?
Because thats how your reply reads..............

We should take this conversation to a different forum, and leave this thread for visa stuff

Yes, good idea!

But lets not just sweep it under the carpet because if Bombay Bill's statement is true, this means that a lot of FN's, of various nationalities, are spending "extended leisure time" in India without realising that they are liable for large amounts of tax!

This is the wrong forum for this, but...

The Indian authorities say that if you live in India for more than six months in a year then you become an 'Indian resident' and so tax is liable in India on your whole world wide income.

If you're a beach dweller in Goa they're probably not going to notice you.

If you're a high priced computer trainer in Bombay then they probably are.
