Expat salary in Coimbatore

I've been searching through the posts trying to gather information on salaries in India, and I'm still uncertain, so I hope you don't mind answering another question.

My husband is considering a job in Coimbatore, paying $2,250 per month + $250 housing allowance, which I believe comes to an annual salary of 1,375,498.09 rupees. I am sure that is more than sufficient to live in India, but I wanted to know if it is a typical expat salary. (He is a flight instructor.)

We are negotiating salary and terms now.

Also, anyone here know anything about life in Coimbatore?

TIA

there was an article in a business magazine talking about how in demand airplane instructors are in india...it gives your husband the upper hand with bargaining.

I don’t know if coimbatore is a gigantic village or a big town or a mini city or a micro metro!!!

The fact is it’s everything together.

A crowded industrial town (mostly textile & small machinery related) amid an otherwise agricultural/farming surrounding.

Not an expensive place to live. Well connected by road, rail & air to the nearby important cities.
Last but not the least, a fine weather (though a bit hot at times) awaits you.

Thank you for this reply. I've been asking around in several places and not too many people know much about Coimbatore. That doesn't necessarily frighten me off, because I am used to moving to places that are not always the top picks on expat lists of places to live. (Deeply rural China being one example.)

I think I can be happy anywhere where I've got fairly reasonable access to transport and greenery. (My personal list of requirements when searching for a place to live as shrunk to that - greenery, blue sky and transport access.)

Coimbatore is really a great place. Central place for travelling to a lot of good places. Ooty, Coonnor, Bandipur National Forest, Palghat, Munnar, Yercaud, all are nicely accessible. Good restaurants, Very good local/regional transportation, Salubrious Climate throughout the year and a lot of other things. Lately lot of software companies like Wipro, Infosys are slowly acquiring land for their new offices. Not a bad idea. But as other IMers suggested, for a flight instructor, you can bargain some more in terms of package. Good Luck.

Not to mention that it is one of the most important centers of learning in South India.. Atleast 50 engineering and medical colleges each in such a small city, big town.. whatever beach was saying

That sounds really great... I'm getting quite excited because I think this is going to happen. The company sounds good and they are receptive to our requests for additional benefits.

Incidentally, for a flight instructor in the US/Canada, salary is quite low, because they are considered low on the aviation career ladder - average $30,000 or less. Internationally, the field is exploding, especially in China and India. Their growing economies are fueling massive growth in regional and national airlines and they are desperate for pilots. So the work outside of the US offers similar pay to the US - but usually amazing benefits.

Another question - I am a US trained registerd nurse (With Associate Degree in Nursing), a bachelor degree in Spanish, with experience teaching English, Spanish and working as a cardiac nurse. (I like to diversify.) Any idea on work possibilities? I am not sure whether I will look for work or start a distance Master's program.

Going Native, as a child I spent every summer in Coimbatore. I visit Coimbatore every year on my trips back to India. It has grown a fair bit over the years, but it remains a mid-size town/city and is not as overwhelming as the larger cities. You can travel to the hills quite often, or drive to places like Pollachi (very green- from what I remember) when you want a change. You can also travel to Kerala quite easily. There's a pretty good bookstore called Landmark (a branch of the Madras chain), and there are some nice small lending libraries as well.
The weather is quite pleasant, as the summers are not too long. My relatives in Coimbatore cannot manage the heat in Madras and constantly tell me the water is much sweeter in Coimbatore!

Here are some websites of hospitals which provide cardiac care:

http://www.kmchonline.com/

Good luck with the move.

i have travelled to Coimbatore many times, esp from the airport. It is an industrial / educational town , known as the Manchestor of India. this is a big city, dusty/noisy , but do not compare with shanghai / shenzen etc. Many world class exporters operate from the city.

USD 250 pm housing allowance will be sufficient. the living expense is not much , but it all depends on your style of living. climate will be hot most of the year, you might need A/c.

regards

its great you have diverse skills.

register with a local foreign language institute if they have one to teach spanish. or if they dont, advertise in the local paper and teach at home [c**h payments only ].

you could teach english for some local call centres..maybe....

you could also call up the local hospitals and ask.if they have a nurse position though with the labour laws..you might have to jump a bunch of loopholes.

you could scout around for international trading companies [since this city along with nearby tirupur is a big textile town focused on textile exports] that might require translation services...from spanish to english or vice versa.

if you want to study..since kerala is so close by as well not that tamil nadu is short of it....there might be some alternative medicine schools and ashrams..and that field is hot everywhere...might be good to get that knowledge from the locals.

good luck!
