English-medium school in Tirupur (Tamil Nadu)?
Hi there,
A question about schools in Tamil Nadu. We won't be living in Chennai, so International Schools not an option... So I'm trying to find out a bit more about English-medium schools. Does anyone know what age children start school (as distinct from nursery)? Also, how long is the school day? And what would be the expectations for a 5-yr old? Last question, when does the school year start? thanks 4gotoindia Last edited by machadinha : Mar 4th, 2008 at 03:12. Reason: adjusted title |

hi 4!
high-5 to you [sheesh wise-a$$ me] english medium schools in india: [am generalising now]: nursery : age 5+ what they need to know are usually... naming colours [ what is the colour of your hair, colour of grass ] naming animals [ visuals of cat, dog, zebra, giraffe ] counting from 1 - 5 [ how many ears do you have ]the school year generally begins from after the summer holidays - sometime in june. [i might be off about this] there are various 'alternative' schools which have sprouted up all over the south. these are schools which teach by the play-way method, holistic education whilst completing the syllabus. the parents have to pass the interview in most of these schools, rather than the child . try and see if there are any of these schools available in your region. everyday academic stress is null and void in schools like these.if you tell us which region of tamil nad you will be in - perhaps we can suggest some schools. :brishti |

Age for admission to nursery is around 3.
Age for admission to class I (start of proper schooling) is 5 to 6 years. |

yup - i stand corrected.
by 5+ a child would be in Class I here. correct nayan. [been a long time since i was in school ]school hours differ from school to school... but the average hours spent in school is anything between 5-6 hours daily. some schools have a 5-day week, some 5 1/2 day week. :brishti |

So a 5-yr old would start in Class 1? I'm interested to hear about the 'alternative' schools - as I'm worried about him being thrown into a very formal school setting (v different from what he is used to). We'll be in Tiruppur - on the off-chance anyone knows any schools there!
thanks! Last edited by 4gotoIndia : Mar 3rd, 2008 at 19:37. Reason: typo |

i'm looking, i'm enquiring, i'm still trying to get you schools... just need a couple of days to get the info.
off-the-cuff: if... the schools do not meet your requirements, have you ever given home-schooling a thought? :brishti |

Home-schooling isn't an option, as we will both be working full time. We're not fussed about the 'learning' per se (he is only 5!), but want to find somewhere that he'll be happy, have fun and make friends.
Thanks for all your input - it is really appreciated! |

My son turned 5 in Dec 2007 and qualified to go into Senior kindergarten here. The school year runs June to April. As we only joined in Jan we found the standard too high in Snr KG and placed him in Junior KG. Generally I find the emphasis tends to be more on writing rather than on reading as it would be at this level back in Australia (where we reside permamently). we're in Chennai and the kids attend an international school purported to follow Australian way of teaching but I think its hard to completely eliminate the Indian way of teaching......
