Oh, and to 4gotoIndia, the Fulbright program (essentially the US Gov't) is helping to facilitate our research visas. So to be honest, I'm not entirely sure what the standard protocol is. However, if I do learn more, I'll be sure to post it for others in the future.

Hi Aaron,
I don't want to worry you - but I don't think it makes any difference who funds the research - as all applications for clearance have to go thro' the same procedure in Delhi. Ours took 4 months to get from London to Delhi, then it was another month in Delhi in one office... now it is being sent round the houses and we've been told it will take a minimum of 3 months from now. (Oh, and the visa itself has to be issued from the country that you are resident in. CAn't be issued from Delhi). Of course, it may be that Fulbright has special arrangements... 4 |

4gotoindia,
we just got our visas! much quicker than we had hoped, our applications arrived for processing on monday, and our visas arrived on friday (via travisa outsourcing). our trip seems much more real now, and we are very excited. if anyone has any other tips on where to live in jaipur, we would love to hear it! |

Hi, Aaron--I spent the last two summers living in Jaipur, studying Hindi with AIIS. Last summer I lived in Raja Park/Tilak Nagar (right on the boundary), the summer before that in Jawahar Nagar. These are both south of the old city. I liked them both, but I think I preferred Raja Park because of the convenience of the main bazaar. My instinct says that rather than a separate studio, you're going to want to find a flat with an extra room rather than trying to negotiate two rental properties.
I found the outlying neighborhoods completely livable (all of the neighborhoods I mentioned are convenient to Rajasthan University, as are Adarsh Nagar, Malviya Nagar and Gandhi Nagar). They are also convenient to the Jawahar Kala Kendra, one of better known art centers in Jaipur. Generally speaking, the tourists tend to stay near the old city, and branch out toward the west, where the main bus stand and rail station sit. At any rate, I'll be doing 9 mos. in India beginning in December, also on the Fulbright-Hays. I'll be happy to answer any other questions about Jaipur (if I can) if you or Erin want to e-mail or phone me (I'm willing to exchange contact info--I can see Erin's name is #38 on my Fulbright paperwork). |

Oh, and honestly, living in any of the outlying neighborhoods will give you a much more "small town" feeling. I was absolutely shocked at the size of Jaipur the first time I looked down on it from Nahagarh Fort--it's huge, but on the ground, it can feel small and friendly.

snjr22- thanks for the advice, it's great to hear from you. erin and i would love to talk to you some more about jaipur. maybe you have erin's email from the fulbright list?
and yes, i have seen some photographs from nahagarh fort and the city seemed a bit overwhelming (understatement). glad to hear you found quieter neighborhoods. we saw that you are interested in architectural history, which is also exciting, and a topic that is close to our hearts. cheers |

Hi, Aaron--I only have the e-mail addresses for the other DDRA Scholars, not the Student Researchers (I'm #62 on the Status on Certificate of Affiliation list, btw). You can reach me by adding yahoo dot com to the end of my Indiamike user name, though. E-mail me through that address, and I can give you my university e-mail and phone number.
Wait until you get to stand on the walls of the Nahagarh Fort and watch a summer storm roll into the city--you'll be happy enough to be in Jaipur ![]() |

living in jaipur
Hi there
with your kind of budget you can find dozens of reasonably good hotels in jaipur to live, if you b4 hand negogiate about your tenure of stay. It would be tough for you to rent an appt in jaipur as ppl dont usually rent to foreigner except for in a location where u will end up with touts. So look for hotels and bargain for a good deal which u ll get |

Mod Note
Hi Bindaas and welcome to IndiaMike. We don't allow text language ("u", "b4 hand" etc). We have members from all over the world and it is difficult for some people to understand. Please stick to plain English. Thanks for your input to the boards.

![]() I would suggest to look something around Raja Park, Adarsh Nagar, Bapu Nagar, Bajaj Nagar, Malviya Nagar. Reasons for suggesting there places: * All these places are not very far of from each other and you can find decent places for renting out in your budget. * If you hire a place off from the main roads then these are peaceful locations. * "Jawahar Kala Kendra" is near by to these place. This is an institution which promotes all kinds of art. May be if you talk to them, they can help you out with a studio for your wife. I have seen many plays and exhibitions here. * Rajasthan University is near by. You can contact the Professors of the University who can refer you to the people and places of your interest. * The old walled city is not very far off from these places. Quote:

I know many people at Jaipur but now sure whether they will get ready to help some stranger who is not from there land. But looking at your interests and if I were you, I would approach some local students in the field of Painting (for your wife) and Film Making (for you). They will be knowing the details of local places around you and you can share with them some kind of exposure and experience. Who knows, May be you get some very good friends... Wishes... |

coming to Jaipur
Hi, I found your post by accident < ahhh, cyberworld >.
I will be passing through Jaipur around October 10th. This will be my 3rd trip to India. If you are interested in having tea with another American artist please reply. I would be interested in hearing about your Fulbright. Also, I have a friend living in Jaipur who may be able to help you with some arrangements, if need be. Om Shanti ~ |

Hi,
U can easily afford a two bedroom, hall & a kitchen appartment in ur budget. The ideal areas to stay in are C-Scheme,Bapu Nagar,Bani Park & Vaishali Nagar.I live in C-Scheme area & can help u arrange for it if u have still not found any suitable accomodation. Mod Note Hi seasahil. It would be helpful to the site if you could use full words instead of txt language. Its an international audience we serve - and english is hard enough in full let alone when its in code. Thanks. Last edited by brownboy66 : Oct 10th, 2008 at 01:08. Reason: message to op |
