Are there any expats in Udaipur?
Hi guys,
I am a single 30 year old New Zealand woman looking to settle in Udaipur in 2008 and run a guest house. I have been several times and absolutely love Udaipur - but wondered if anyone had experience of living there? Would it be a lonely place for an expat? Is this a mad idea? It feels very safe to me - but would value advice from anyone else has experienced the good and the bad. Much thanks Twinkle |

Udaipur is famous around the world as the City Of Lakes or Venice of East.Udaipur is calm and quiet and there is no struggle for everyday living.Plenty of foreigners as Tourists are found in Udaipur but cant say how many foreign residents there...? Its a good choice but a tough one indeed....

Udaipur is probably one of the most beautiful cities of India and a great place for tourists. A guesthouse here is always a good choice!
However we are still lacking a good infrastructure, there are no large super markets and no English cinemas or any other "cultural" timepass. I have no clue how many expats are living in the city, but I guess you can find a couple of them. Several guesthouses are run by foreigners and some are working for the big hotels such as lake Palace or Udai Vilas. Several ex-pats also live here being the spouse of Indians. |

Udaipur seemed to me to be a place with lots of expats - some of the ones we met were a little 'odd' but nonetheless... Lots of people seem to go there for long stays on a regular basis... Why not ask some of the people who already run guesthouses there?

Welcome to the forum!
Well - I haven't moved to Udaipur YET - but am visiting every 4 months or so until I arrange things. If Udaipur doesn't work out I will move to Jodhpur instead. I have only made friends with locals so far...while there are a LOT of westerners around who I have met they all (so far)of the transient tourist type. Funny you ask about kiwis/australians - I am a kiwi myself. I would be VERY interested to know how you enjoy Udaipur and how you managed to get a job there! best of luck - you are living the dream! ![]() |
