Work Permit & FRRO Registration Mumbai

I recently arrived in Mumbai on a 1-year multiple entry Employment visa and I need to know what to do next.

I am the first foreigner hired by this company, and I would like to provide them with accurate information about the things they need to provide for me to get a proper Work Permit. I have worked as a foreigner in Thailand for a year, so I am sort of aware of the various beaucracies.

I am in New Mumbai, can I do the FRRO registration at a local police office or is it best to travel to Mumbai?

What is the process of getting a Work Permit? What items do I need to provide, etc? Is there a mimum tax payment requirement to obtain a WP? Where do I go to registere for a work permit? Any help would be greatly apperciated, Thanks

Matt

Hi Matt,

normally the registration has to be done in a time period of 14 days after your arrival. There is an extra foreigner registration office (FRRO), you have to find out where it is in Mumbai. There you have to show your passport and visa, fill a form, submit a couple of passport pictures (I don't remember the exact no.) and submit a letter from your company (in my case I used the invitation letter for obtaining the visa).

After this procedure the local police will come to your office and ask you some questions. This can happen several times, when you are travelling it is advisable to tell your company where you are going/staying.

After some time you can go again to the FRRO to pick up your residence permit.

Before you leave the country, you have to go again to the FRRO, fill a new form and give the permit back.

That was the procedure in Kerala, I didn't have any problems and was treated quite friendly, so don't worry.

Have a good time in India!

Your employment visa is your work permit. You do not need any additional permit. You will have to go to the FRRO desk in Mumbai to register. This is the address,

Foreigners Regional Registration Office
3rd Floor, Special Branch Bldg.,
Badruddin Tayabji Lane,
Behind St. Xaviers College,
Mumbai-400001.

Telephone----022-22621169
Fax----------022-22620721

If I need to leave the country temporarily, on a business tip or vacation back home, do I need to file anything with the FRRO department? I have a 1-year multiple entry employment visa. Thanks

just to clear things up for me, as i'm in the same situation as matt...
the reason for going to the FRRO is to get a Residents Permit, which is for anyone who has a visa valid for longer than 180days. ?

Federica mentioned that when you leave the country temporarily you have to give back your residence permit to the FRRO... really truly? and fill out more forms?? My job will involve a whole lot of back and forth between europe and india. eeek.

I've heard nightmare stories about registering at the Mumbai FRRO - the ulitmate in being shunted from office to office to office all day...

not looking forward to it

but am looking forward to finally being a resident of india!

I think Federica was referring to leaving India permanently. You are okay to leave temporarily w/o returning the residence permit. I'm going to the Mumbai FRRO soon though, and will verify this.

i am entering the country for the first time, with my employment visa, for only 1 day.
then i leave again for 3 weeks.
i obviously wont be able to register 14 days after i first enter, but will be able to after my second entry which i guess strictly speaking will only be my 2nd day in india.
does anyone think this will be a problem with FRRO??

cheers,
michaela

michaela,

I would either give your Indian embassy a call or the FRRO office in Mumbai. Sometimes immigration and government organizations are weird. I wouldn't risk loosing your expensive Indian visa, on something silly like this.

I have no ideas about special cases like when you are leaving the country only after one day. But I guess you can report at FRRO after your second entry.

In Trivandrum they told me and my colleague whenever we are leaving the district (!) we should report this at the FRRO. Sounded a bit silly for us as we were leaving the district quite often.... My colleague went there again and they told us if we are leaving for more than 4 weeks we should tell it. So I guess in case you are leaving the country temporarly you should inform them.

It happenend several times that the local police came to our office to check whether we are there.

Anyway, I would inquire about all these things at FRRO in Mumbai as many things are different in different states and it is mostly very dependent on the person who is dealing the issue.

You are officially supposed to notify the FRRO if you are leaving India for more than a few days. Although the law is ambiguous you should play it safe and let the FRRO know every time you leave India. The authorities in Mumbai can be very picky at times and it is best to avoid any hassle.

Employment Visa Extension

Hey I am a Bangladeshi. I have got a 6 month Employment visa.
My Employer is a friend of mine.
now the problem is that the guys at the FRRO seem very defending that bangladeshis are not granted employment visa extensions in mumbai. and that i have to go to delhi for it.
They even doubt delhi will do it.

any idea?

The registration at the FRRO is for residency, not for employment. You only have to do this if you intend on staying in India for more than 180 consecutive days.

So for the poster who is leaving after 1 day, my assumption is that it does not apply untill you return, and then your 14 days start from your second date of entry. But you may want to check this. Also it is possible to register after the 14 days, you just have to pay a penalty.

I dealt with the FRRO in Chennai, and despite the stories, it wasnt that bad, I had to make 2 trips and it took a week, but it was done without undue hassle.
